yeah, most v8's are just boring. i have been around v8's longer than rotaries, but i just hooked on the high revving motors. only been hooked on rotaries for about 3 years now. and still have not had one that ran right.

The one V8 ive recently gotten a chance to experience was in the new mustang gt500 convertible, and that thing with a supercharger on top had no problems whatsoever with throwing me back in the seat and breaking the rears loose. It was quite a shock to feel some torque (other cars i have experienced recently are my NA 7, 96 toyota corolla, pontiac vibe GT, 1998 honda CR-V... none of which could really be called a torque monster)

Most v8's that I have driven are similar to what's been described, but I still haven't found anything negative about the on in my truck. The powerband is suprising. It doesn't fall on its face when it gets near redline, keeps pulling hard all the way to the next shift. I like it.

the mustang v8 is crappy...when i test drove one cause I was looking for a new car..I couldn't even get it to break loose in second. my current car witha ls1 breaks loose ins econd and spins 3rd a lil...and its geared for top end..1st goes to 50..second to around 75 and third it 105ish. if you did that in a 98-02 ls1(camaro, firebird or vette)..you would have probably done a 180. but i agree with most of the post..the older v8s..l98, the 5.0s..ect are slow as ****.

None of the current ones. The 4.7 in my truck is based off the same engine as the bigger lexus v8... the one that comes in the ls430, maybe something else too, but I'm not sure.
The 2007 tundra is going back to pushrod for some reason though. Its getting a 5.7l 355hp, ~360 ft/lb all new motor. I don't know what made them go back to a cam in block design, but knowing how toyota engineers work, they'll probably still make it pretty impressive... I guess we'll have to see.

The more I think about the whole v8 thing, the more torn I am. I absolutely love old muscle cars, and love the engines that they have... Its just the new v8's that suck.
My first car was a 72 Mustang mach 1 with a 460ci monster stuffed under the hood. My dad and I added a blower, lower comp pistons, new rods, crank, heads, cam, and all sorts of other goodies. I haven't had another car that has been anywhere close to as much fun as that thing was. It was a beast of a car, but that v8 didn't even seem to notice all the weight it was dragging.
I never got to take the car on the track, but on the street I only lost one time, the other car was a full out barely street legal twin turbo vette... and he barely beat me. less than a car length.
And as much as a rotary's sound gives me goosebumps, that low crackling rumble of an idling big block with a huge cam still lures me.
I'm planning on building another bad *** monster muscle car one day. But I'll always have a rotary there too. I can't pull my self away from the damn little 1.3l now that I've owned a couple...

way way back i bought a 68 mustang, 302ish v8, holley carb, intake headers, 4 speed etc etc. i dont think the mustang was tuned very well, nor did i really have the money to make it right. i decided to sell it cause my base 86 rx7 was faster, havent really looked back.
now my 71 mercedes has a 3.5L v8, and it does haul in the mail quite well, it spins all of 1st and a little of second.
figures i'd forget i actually OWN a car with a v8 in it.
