That, and a new car, have been the two most aggravating things I've had the displeasure of purchasing.
Getting a new computer is just a pain in the ***, i know for 99% of the internet browsing users out there ( ) it's not, but for me I gotta transfer **** over, hope i didn't forget anything, then install all the software to work with those files, PAIN IN THE ***!

Just ghost the hard drives! All automated and usually works great!
I want to jump in; even though windows has lots of short falls I think win2k and xp (with all its service packs, patches, security fixes, etc) are pretty stable and they aren't too demanding on the hardware. I used win2k and redhat on all my systems up until everyone stopped supporting 2k. I then switched everything to xp, Ive been problem free for a few years. I bought a new laptop and it came with Vista, I didnt have time to wipe it and install xp before I was headed out of the country and I couldnt do it on the road. I was forced to use Vista for my video/photo/web/music editing, which I use all memory intensive professional software ... Vista failed at everything. Its by far the worst OS I've ever used.
My point is, if you compare the OSs you get pros and cons for both. I have used windows as my primary OS for many years like I said and I have rarely come into any problems that weren't my fault. 2k and xp are both decently stable platforms, it just so happens that most of its users don't know what theyre doing which leads to problems. Would you buy a multi thousand dollar tool and not know how to use it? Probably not... unfortunately thats what the mass majority of americans have done.
just my opinion...

I LOVEEEEEEEEEE going to get new cars, shopping for them, the whole deal.
My insurance guy just came in today with some tiny HP laptop, thinking of getting one to bring back and forth to work.

rob if you really want to save money, want a small compact laptop, and are just interested in internet basics, grab a dell 12.1" netbook or something...you can scoop them for like $400-600 for a real good one. to really save i think dell has a $219 10" Acer netbook. netbook is all about email, word documents and internet browsing. thats it. basically a no frills product. like an entry level toyota.
phins - dont worry about when you eventually get a new mac, whenever that is, they also have a great migration tool, i swapped al my needed info from my old macbook (now my g/f's) to my macbook pro roughly 2 minutes after taking it out of the box, especially with a nice FW800 cable instead of 400 or usb. my old macbook has fw400 (the new ones dont) and the MBP has FW800, so i was transferring at FW400 speeds which i think is still like 5x USB speed. altho in 5 years USB 3.0 will probably be widespread which is supposively going to be reaching if not passing FW speeds. You've probably experienced the migration tool with amy's MB Air.
oh and my favorite thing about mac osx... no ******* "wizards" everything is put in plain english so you dont NEED a wizard, which rarely do what you need anyone. Lots of apple haters say mac osx is to dumbed-down not powerful enough etc. BLA to that, when im setting up mundane tasks i prefer easy to use commands and clicks and such, but i can pop open xcode3.1 and write you up some powerful applications. Everything just feels more accessible and easier to mold.
honestly its impossible to "convert" windows users, because you cant explain why osx is better because a lot of it simply "feels" better due to layout and design choices, once you get to the core it begins a back and forth war over technicalities.
all i know is my mac can group up with any windows setup, not many windows setups will happily latch onto a mac tho, nevermind the networking wizard lol.
also, as far as windows, xp isn't that bad but it took a while from it's release to get to that point. hell vista is on sp2 now and people are just starting to call it stable. xp is the only windows i'll still mess around with.

you know you want to go door to door like a jehovah witness
I already do, but that's to spread the word of barack obama and his following, maybe i could work something into my pitch about PC's and windoze.

I went to doctors office one time and they had watchtowers, I strait up asked them if they were jahova witnesses and the lady said no, I meant to throw those away, sorry about that. LOL I was going to tell them to suck it.
