so we hate computers not working

In our household, we've gone through several computers in the past several years. My wife wants to get a Mac, but it's so hard dropping at least $1k on their bottom-of-the-line model laptop, when netbooks and dells are so much cheaper.
Is it really worth it? Will I be shocked and amazed by how awesome it is?

MY GOD YES!
If you buy a mac you will wonder why the **** you EVER owned a PC, I've worked all the PC's out of he system. I have a macbook pro amy has a macbook air. Amy has literally not rebooted her machine since she got it. You open it and it comes right up, no waiting for it to wake up, etc, etc.... No virus's and **** just works, exactly the way you would think it should. battery life is amazing, you can't go wrong, I'd rather have an entry level mac then a top of the line PC

Good to know! I know the learning curve used to be an issue, but now can't you run windows on a mac anyways? And do peripherals just plug and play (I know they used to advertise this)?
I'll do some research and read reviews and such, but right now it's looking like this:
Tax refund shopping list:
computer
grill
That ought to wipe it out.

You very rarely have to install any drivers, they are already there, you just plug stuff in and it works. Yes you can run windows for windows apps right in side of osx HOWEVER, I haven't booted my windows install in months and I didn't even bother installing it on amy's macbook air. you simply won't need it and you sure as hell won't miss windoze. Mac's handle USB peripherals much better then windows, they are not near as complicated as windows, they don't disappear, they instantly recognize and like I said you rarely have to install any drivers, stuff on the mac just works.
If you have any issues there is only one number to call, Apple made the whole thing and they support the whole thing. It comes with photos software, email, messenger, garage band, movie editing software, itunes everything works and is included. The only thing you might want to buy is iWork 09 it's $79 and it's Apple's version of Microsoft office for 1/5th the price.
OSX is very intuitive, where you would usually expect to find something... well that's where you will find it. There really isn't a major learning curve, but there are several "switcher" sites for people that need a little help.

i see your point baldy, but if all you are doing is photos and internet browsing- why spend all that money?
I had one virus on my PC, it was a stupid one too, when I google something instead of going to the link it would bring me somewhere else. A $39 program fixed it without having to reboot.
I think people reboot because they cant figure something out, but that is the only time I paid for antivirus and it worked GREAT, saved me from rebooting.

IMO it's throwing good money after bad, I can buy a piece of **** HP or Dell and have all the headaches for 2/3rds the cost and by the time I replace it because it's junk I could have purchased a Mac, got the 3 year warranty, saved the frustration and spent a little more initially instead of buying two hps or dells in that time. Basically the money you save, you don't really save. Especially if you calculate the headaches involved with an inferior operating system and hardware.
Plus you get all the software necessary to edit your photos, you can even plug in your electric guitar and record with garage band, you know how much that software would cost for a PC and do you know how horribly it would prolly work? The lack of battery life alone would make me never buy another PC. I can work on this thing for 8 hours on a charged battery, my HP with lower specs I'd maybe get 2, amy's was lucky to get 1 hour.
