[quote name='GreyGT-C' date='May 12 2005, 10:18 PM']not necessarily lying to them about it. EVERY contract has that in it... nothing going on when your time comes up... you go home. Someone blows up the statue of liberty... expect job security for a while.

18 month enlistment and ongoing conflict in two different countries..... I dont think you're gonna be goin home early, It just sucks you have to advertise a job like you're a used car salesman at a buy here pay here lot.

maybe they are looking at it for the long run, its not like enlistments have been going up, they have been on a steady decline, I know alot of people would sign up if they didnt have to commit to 4 years.

yah i was gettin ready to say also about the clause in the contract that says they can keep you as long as they want...

I was listening to PBS tonight about the recruitment problems the Army and Marines are having.. Nobody wants to sign a warrant for their own death. Navy and Airforce haven't had any problems.. cuz well ppl know they don't have to go on the front lines in those branches.

i still want to join the air force. school is very expensive for what I want to do.

plus, they have tier categories for my situation. i have to get 15 college credits before I can join. this is the air force, not sure about army, marines,or navy. don't want to do navy because i don't want to be out on a boat 6 months out of the year.

They may drop the required time you have to serve active duty from 4 years to 18 months but the contract you sign is for 8 years...its a dirty little thing most don't think about when they join...Its called IRR (inactive ready reserve) basically if you do your required "active" time of 18 mo. or 4 years you still have inactive time, out to 8 years...Now anytime they need you for something major (like now) they can call you back to active duty for however long...We have 3 of these guys in my unit right now..And they are Pissed beyond belief to be called back in...Anyone better ask if they are thinking of joining. How much IRR time you will have...IRR is on every branch...oh another thing they don't tell you about is STOP LOSS. that is where they freez all people from getting out of whatever service you are in or they can freez a specific job..You don't get out until the stop loss is ended...almost half of my unit had to sign involuntary extentions because of Stop loss for this deployment.
