recently i have been debating on which car i should get. i've narrowed it down to two choices (originally being the 5.0 mustang, miata, 240, rx7, sc300, e30 bmw, e34 bmw, mk3 supra, cressida, etc)



the choices i came up with are:



the 2nd gen rx7 (n/a) and the 240sx.

i want to drift, so i want to make some power, heres what i plan on doing



with the 240sx, i am going to drop in the infiniti vh45de v8 in (lighter than the KA) which runs somewhere around 280hp stock. i plan first to get 2 small turbos (t25 or higher) then upgrade to a t66 later. the twin turbo should run around 300-340hp. the t66 later on down the line......hahaa do i even need to say?



and with the n/a fc, im going to drop in the t2, upgrade the turbo to a gt2871 or 76r turbo, fmic, all that.

im looking for a decent 300-350hp. ive calculated the price for both.



a running 240sx is going to cost around 1800 for the car (400 for a shell) and the vh45 i can get anywhere for even less than 1k. the 300zx tranny (n/a) costs 400 or less. altogether 3200 for the running 240 with the engine. 2600 for a non running 240 and the engine. (labor fee doesnt apply b/c my dad and i are doing it.)



then the t25's i estimate will cost around 150-300 each.





a running fc costs anywhere from 2000 up. the t2 with tranny, ecu, wiring, etc costs 2000. thats about 4000. a non running fc with the t2 will cost 3000.

to sum it up, 240sx with a vh45 would be 3200 (previously running) or 2600 bucks (no engine prior)

things i like: less than the fc, 8 cylinders, high hp numbers, light weight, gets sideways well.

i kinda figured nobody would say anything because its against rotaries. thats what kinda prevented me from posting before. i just dont wanna get something i will regret. dats y i ask for opinions.



wat do you guys think?

go with the turbo fc, they can be had for much cheaper than you think search craigslist, autotrader.com and cars.com, this forum and the other rx7 forum .

i can find running turbo fc all day long for 2000 or less. granted you may want to plan an engine rebuild shortly depending on the type of power output you'd eventually like to make but still i believe $ wise you will be spending less then your other options.

Well I have a friend who does 240sx's.... and he just bought a CLEAN, I mean CLEAN RB26DETT-swapped one with a dyno of 680hp for $18k.



But while I was looking at cars, before I decided on the FB RX-7, I was looking at a non-running 240sx for $700. Granted, the body was a little beat up, but repairable.



So how much you want to spend will depend on what you get. I saw a nice FC CONVERTABLE go for $900 on Craigslist the other day. You just have to know what you want and keep your eyes open for the deals. I missed out on that, because I DEFINATELY would've bought it.



Just do like I did. Every day search Craigslist- and not just YOUR craigslist, but all craigslists within the distance you'd be willing to travel to get a car. And every day search eBay within XXXmiles. You'll find your ride.

That sounds like a hell of a lot of work and labour, as opposed to...

That's also provided that the VH45DE will fit in without any added modification to the engine bay. Not really a Nissan guy, wouldn't be able to tell you.



I would say you would probably be spending more on the 240, what with the V8, and you want to run twins?



240 sounds cheaper to obtain than an FC(provided it's in good condition), but the end result might be way more money than you'd have expected. Unless of course, it has that engine in it already(VH45DE), but that you can't exactly guarantee if they did a standup job on it.

i think your maths are off by at least 3x... i'd plan on about 10k for either the turbo fc or 240. 240 will be a little cheaper overall, but after suspension, wheels, engine, exhaust, radiators, clutch etc etc



it would be about 4k, if you had the body, and the motor already

Buy an N/A FC. Learn about the rotary engine and the RX-7's pro's and con's. Drive it for 1 year. Sell it. Purchase TII. Do NOT swap an N/A FC to a TII. There are alot of reason's why, and the main reason is money cost and labor cost. You are taking a car that was OEM Naturally Aspirated and changing it to a TII powerplant. You will have to change out alot of things, and while you were doing that, you could've bought a TII and started modifying that with the swap money for the N/A-TII FC.



Also, you can find a running TII for less than 3k. You just have to look around and sometimes be willing to travel over 200 miles to get the car. ****, I am traveling 900 miles this month to Colorado to pick up a beat up VERY OLD Mazda.
