Not sure of what the ranks of the air force is since the navy is not like the other branches. But a sergeant if I recall is a non-commisioned officer. So I guess you were right with the E-6
There is NO WAY you can enter the service and be granted E-5/6.

You can enter as an E4 tops. That's with Education. That's a Senior Airman airforce, and a Specialist in the ARMY.

Reason being is the skill levels are determined by time in grade (RANK) and testing. It wouldn't work if a bunch of people were joining the service as Non-Comissioned Officers (NCO) and had no leadership experiences.

If he is PRIOR SERVICE, it is possible. Not, probable, but possible.

I'm an E-6. I came in with a bunch of E4's and trust me, they have to meet certain criteria before they are even recommended for promotion.

He wouldnt have prior service and be forced into boot camp. That is why I cant understand the E-6 either. But he does have a degree and experiance in music. So maybe they made an exception for that. I thought E-3 was the highest before going in.

Can you ask him how the hell he is doing that?

Even if you enter as an E-3... It still takes a few YEARS to get to E-6.

I am guessing because he has experiance as a musician. Like you said before that your rank is determind by your skill level. Maybe that is why he is going to be moved up in rank.
