Handguns...
.44 mag may be the macho choice, but I don't enjoy shooting it. I have fired a friend's, and the recoil is just plain ugly. His does have a rather short barrel, though.
I like my Browning semi-autos, they're old school, but have a nice feel. I've never heard anything bad about Sig and H&K. Glock is supposed to be very reliable, but I don't like the feel, especially the trigger. 9mm and .40 are good choices, but I really enjoy shooting my .45 ACP Colt--great stopping power, reasonable recoil, high consistency.
A good revolver will be a cheaper, more reliable choice. For basic all-around utility, you can't beat a .357 Magnum by Colt or S & W. I just prefer semi-autos 'cause they're cooler.

If you are going to use it for mostly target and some home def. I would try a para ordanance .45 1911a1 or a springfield armory 1911a1. Stay far far away from anythng beretta in hands guns, they suck plain a simple..espacally the 92f. Browning hp is also a very good fire arm the .40 is good for target and home def. Glock is good they can fire under almost every shitty condition. As for what you should get thats up to you Advise is to find a range and rent a few to see which one YOU shoot well and feel best holding.
Works2r FN's are legal in us and the 5.56 is nothing special its just an m-16 round or .223 . like the .308 M-14 round is 7.62. Pick up shotgun news I see FNs for sale all the time.

Oh almost forgot...JT not all guns are illegal in Japan. Hand guns and Rifles are but you can legaly own a shotgun. They do cost around 3x what they do in us, they have to be locked up, you can only use them during hunting seasions, and they have a permit that must be renewed every year and thats around 850 usd. I used to get accesories for this JN that I used to work with. He took me duck hunting a few times.

I don't know that many people with guns. But every forum I've been on I'm surprised how many members have them. Like everyone and their brother.
Perhaps it's just Canada though. LOL.
