Ok, I got the whole shebang going now. I got the game and the wheel today. I've already got a 7.1 Klipsch surround sound system with all the encoders you can imagine with optical input. 65" widescreen Hi-Def Sony with component inputs. It took about 15 minutes to get everything hooked up and ready to do (had to find a suitable table and chair for the wheel.) I just now finished the Sunday Cup with my RX-7 (I imported credits with the import feature from my old game for the 100k limit.) Things to know about the game: 1. The wheel is a defining point for the game, period. Buy the wheel if you want fun. 2. This is the first racing game ever where I was disappointed that the race was over. I wanted to keep going! It's very breathtaking with the 7.1 system booming all around me and the high def putting all of the visuals out at 1080i resolution. I give this game a 9.5/10 without the wheel and a perfect 10/10 with it. It's worth the wait and the money.

I thought the PS2 only supported 480 or 720p?
I do want that cable though...

All I want to know is if it lives up to all the hype? I have been a GT fan since the first one, but another $50 for essentially the same game as GT3? I would love some feedback on this game.
Just played it for like 2 2hour sessions, here are my first impressions:
Graphics:
K. The levels are up'd a bit more. The polygon count and blurry pixellated "billboards" and textures on some places are easily pointed out. As such, the dust behind you is still "sprite"-ish in the dirt. But who cares, the cars DO look a tad-bit better (they're all much more shinier I guess..), but when I chose a convert I didn't get to play it with the top down and see a little guy in it! Doh! They said they would!
Sound:
I read they updated the sounds, and it seems they did, but not to what I had guessed/thought. The rx7 sounds more "rotary"ish I suppose. The tire squeal definitely got a bit smarter. Everything else is fine/normal. The new playlist has some fun songs, and the background music as you move around is fine as well.
Gameplay:
Whoa! New interface took getting used to! The RPM is now a "Bar" that you can see "Growing" at the corner of your eye, which helps. The little cheater "Gear hint" still comes up and flashes and helps you out. They have a "Lateral G" bar showing what you're pulling as you come around the bend. They FORCE you to play "In car view" now! Which is fine cause I always play that way, but why take away the fun of checking out what you're driving as you mess around?
The first thing I noticed was the big blurry/shaky feeling when you crash. You really feel like you messed up your car! More realistic I say, but nutty. Also, most "A" class cars (Kinda miss having the class's, now its just by make) in arcade mode show off their stock suspension bad! You can feel/see the car toss easily, dip on braking, lift on acceleration. On a whole I think the gameplay got a bit "tougher", with how a car responds and also the advanced AI.
The abundance of new levels rocks. New York City map, Nurburgring, Sukuba, etc. With the "stock" set of Arcade mode choices, you can be the RE Amimaya FD! It's a wonderful car to drive! They also introduced "Snow" levels as well.
You can update your GT3 accomplishments (lisences) and money for GT4 from the getgo!
Con's:
I miss the easy "Class's" of GT3. Being able to choose cars of similiar "Calibur" without hunting similiar HP cars for all my friends. There's no choice for "Drift" or "Racing" style, but you do choose tire type even in arcade mode.
No online play?! Only "LAN", yea, great. 6 can play at once if you have 2 other friends with PS2's that are either the brand new ones, or with the ethernet adaptar and cables...PLUS you have to have 3 tv's in the same room to do it. Great.
Overall it's worth $50. You could argue that it plays very similiar, or the graphics aren't worth a buy over GT3 etc etc. but it;s been a LONG time, and you know you want some fresh stats/challenges, etc.
I'm pleased overall!

It sounds like the same game as GT3 still, and the fact that the view is in car only is really disappointing to me. I'm sure one of my friends will buy it, i'll have a chance to play it, but I think I will wait until the greatest hits version comes out to add it to the collection.

NO! LOL I Was wrong! I just spent a lot of time looking through the options and manual:
If you hit select, you can go from "lisence plate" view to "out of car" view (see your whole car from behind), in fact they even through in a third view: you can see your hood. It's as if your AT your front windsheild. So it's a bit "higher up" and "back" compared to the lisence plate view...more realistic...and I'm going to try using it.
Yea if you can wait, try it on a friends console, and buy it used later.
You can also (in arcade mode) do a "quick tune" to the car you are driving, meaning more HP, less weight, higher top speed= more fun!
There's lots of other little jibber-jabber's in there too.
