I know some DSM owners in Maryland that have gotten tickets just for having aftermarket exhausts. They weren't speeding, but yet got followed and then pulled over for a ticket. Go figure that one. Maryland has some strict laws. You can even get a ticket for a lowered suspension here.

Should cops pick on people with aftermarket exhausts? Probably not. But they do at times, and they are the law. I find things go better when you stay on the cop's nice side.
Did anyone look to see if those were actual laws?

We've had people here issued tickets for having turbochargers on factory turbocharged cars.

Tickets for carrying pressurized gas (a commercial carrier type ticket) even though the nitrous bottle is under the legal 20 lb bottle size that any individual can carry. (think barbecue tank).

Cops will make something up, because most people won't call them on it.

Nj law is crap, it all depends on the cop. HOWEVER, if he sais it's too loud, there is a DB rating by law. if he does not have a DB meter(wich none ever do), he can't legally prove **** in court

The distance is also important. 95dB at 6 inches is hell of a lot more damaging than at 50 ft. I think the sound falls off exponentially with distance.

that is not true though...

there are statewide dB laws for the volume of exhaust

let me find the link i have it bookmarked

if its loud enough to get teh attention of the cop, that means nothing, stock cars are loud enough to get the attn.... HD bikes are loud enough for attn. .... etc.

plus if that was true then one would assume that every cop has a trained ear for the note of an exhaust, and that each cops ears are the same

theres specific laws, not "oh thats loud isnt it eh?....okay cool lets pull him over"
You wish! In theory maybe. But the fact is, if a cop feels like your car is loud, he can pull you. Even if your car is under the stated db limit (If such a limit is even on the books) he can still issue a ticket for "improper equipment" for anything that does not appear stock. Got money? Got time? Got a good lawyer? Then by all means fight it. The system gives cops a lot of discretion however, and the judge will weigh the word of the cop a whole hell of a lot more heavily than yours. I'd rather just stay under the radar. It's easier.

And a cop will pull a young white man in a loud Japanese car long before he'd ever consider pulling a greybeard on a Harley that's twice as loud. It's not fair, it just IS.

Thats why you go to court. Get there early because your case will be one of the last seen. and if the cop can't stay that long, you win. Also, it is a good idea to check with local laws on things. Where i live the emmisions laws are very weak and cops can't really pull you over for having your cat gutted, unfortunatly i drive a car that can shoot out flames with out spark plugs.

in illinois the law is you cannot have any exhaust that is louder than stock, there is no db limit or law. it just must be at stock levels or quiter. so it varies from car to car, its really up to the manufacture how load of an exhaust they put on a car. and also with the harley comments, they have load pipes for a reason, so they can be heard. its a safety thing
