I had a friend who would start his car in gear, purposely. He would park pointing the way he wanted to go, just turn the key in first and drive off.

Worse thing that will happen when my ebrake fails is the car will roll into the curb and stop itself.

I'll take a pic from under my Subaru. I park in a ramp at my apartment, and it started to flow into the spot next to mine.

We don't have hills in Florida, so we don't have to worry about parking it in gear. I still made it a habit to check and make sure it is in neutral before I start it though.
