A good choice. I was looking for a E-series wagon before I bought the Volvo, but I couldn't find one. Just be prepared to pay a bit more for service if anything breaks. They are good solid cars, though.
my dads got a 95 e320 wagon, and its the one car everyone lusts over.
its been ok to maintain its needed the following since 97ish;
engine harness (its worse than the fd!)
both fuel pumps
the rear diffs unbolt themselves and leak
both rear load levelling shocks ($1200)
but its a mercedes, its engineered to need periodic $1000 worth of work

ooh, going Deutsche, eh? you can get a really decent Saab 900 from around then, turbo w/leather, or an E36 3-series. If your going benz, i like the C-class from those years better, but tahts just cause they're a little bit smaller and lighter. Gonna be pimpin it in the benz lol
the c class is the first not real mercedes, its a pile of poop. the 95 e320's are the last real benz.

8K will get you a low mileage Focus hatchback, which is a good option. Although I don't know why you wouldn't consider a Civic hatch or something along those lines. They are great cars when actually used for their intended purpose (ie a reliable daily driver).
