at the local pet store around here my friend asked for the price on the same dog and the lady told him $1800

so you made out pretty well

personally i would never ever pay for a dog i dont think.

you can go to the animal shelter or the pound and get one for free.

or find someone giving away puppies.

Damn, that's a cute dog, although I'm not really a fan of bulldogs after having been bit by a pit.

Name it Toro.

well when you buy (or aquire) dogs like that they dont always make good pets. If they are from a good bloodline blah blah you will most likley have a better pet...

thats just my experence with labs...

I agree. The only time I would pay for a purebreed is for if I'm going to breed the animal, or stud him out. But that would be for $$$, not for the satisfaction of having a pet.

and I thought mutts made better pets, because they don't have the recessive genes that cause problems like purebreed dogs have

I don't think anyone should pay that much for a dog. There are so many dogs in shelters that need good, loving homes and to adopt one costs so little. What's happening is ignorant people who want to brag about how much they spent are finding breeders with "expensive" dogs. Then they go spend $800 on a "papered" dog so they can show off and say, "My dog's got papers and I spent $800 on him." The thing is, ignorant people are blind to the fact that most breeders are just running a "puppy mill" where they allow in-breeding from the same family line just so they can increase their inventory of sellable pups. That leads to a dilution of the gene pool and genetic defects like deafness (Dalmatians), skin problems (Shar Peis), ear problems (Cocker Spaniels) and advanced aggression (Golden Retrievers and St. Bernards). On top of that, those "papers" that everyone is so keyed-up about don't hold water anymore. They are being forged by unscrupulous breeders so they can increase the marketability of their dogs. I worked at an animal hospital for almost 11 years and you wouldn't believe how many new Dalmatians we saw because of that damn 101 Dalmatians movie. People buy dogs for the wrong reasons. The absolute BEST dogs I ever saw were always from the Humane Society and it only cost $40 to adopt one.

With the kind of technology we have available to us, who needs a "guard dog" any more?

If the shoe fits, wear it. If not, what I said doesn't apply to you.
