Base line dyno on my ol' corvette today
#14
I without a doubt guarantee you sidewinder if you hang out with other sailors and mention you have a corvette one of them will say "what the **** did you buy a sailboat for? Seems like you like to go fast you should have bought a powerboat" that and the other thing that takes some getting used to is 90% of the sailors are the cheapest ******* you will ever find, they would paint their boat pink if the paint was free, hell most of them would prolly paint it two different colors if they got two different colors for free. But they do know how to have one hell of a good time!

I can totally see that happening, some old dudes gonna be all up on my case. lol I just checked out your boats blog site, I guess I never really took a good look but thats a big, nice boat. How do you like the wheel more in the center than aft? Ive talked to a few people about it that said aft has less motion but thats about all I got out of them. Any pros and cons you know of?
sorta off topic Can I hijack my own thread?

Thanks
I have owned both center and aft cockpit, when we bought the Cal I wanted a center cockpit and I absolutely love it. I'm not really clear why an after cockpit would have less motion to be honest, side to side would be the same, however pendulum motion forward to after I would think would be less in a center cockpit, you are over the center of motion as opposed to be behind it, it would be like standing in the center of a teeter totter as opposed to sitting on the seats wouldn't it? I like it when docking as I am in the center of the boat and have a better feel for where it's at. Other then that it's really just a matter of preference, i prefer a center cockpit boat, but there's a lot of people who prefer an aft cockpit. center cockpits are usually a little higher, some people like it, some dont.
Honestly it's just a matter of preference, the argument i've heard make any sense is the one that they can see all of the sails, but i have a window in my roof where i can see my main and the rest are in front of me. We really had only two must haves on the live aboard boat. One was a full size separate shower stall and the other was a center cockpit. We liked both the 424 Pearson and the Cal 46, the Cal being a much harder boat to find. In fact both the designer Bill Lapworth and the builder Jensen retired onto Cal 46's and owned them until they died. Ours was one of the last to roll off of the line and less then 25 were made. See you are getting me started on my boat LOL I have not one single complain in regards to layout, design or build quality the boat will outsail any of the production boats (the 60's models are still winning compac races after 40 years!), full keel handles heavy seas comfortably and I've got enough horsepower to outrun the trawlers (they hate that ). See you shouldn't get me started!
I can definetely tell you what to look for and what to avoid in a cruising boat, we literally looked at hundreds of boats and it was a very discouraging process. There are a lot of boats I can tell you not to waste your time on...
