Another school shooting.

You cant take away guns, ever. You can get them illegally.
The guns in the shooting were purchased legally at a local gunshop without a background check....and what a background this guy had!
To be responsible, you must instill some kind of security measure when dealing with a deadly weapon?
Even spray cans have warnings like "Do not aim at face" and such.
There is no place in America that you can buy a fire arm in a retail store without the back ground check. Period.
There is a disconnect between mental health records and this check. There is no way to know if Mr. whack job is a whack job if he has never seen a whack doctor and developed a record as such.
Prior to WWII thousands of Americans boxed up their fire arms and donated them to the English for use against the Germans. Within the last few years the left wing cry babies in England got control of government and they confiscated all fire arms and destroyed them, including all of those donated arms. Same thing in Austrailia. Also in Cananda.
The English Olympic shooting teams must store their arms and practice in France.
All of these countries have since paid a terrible price in homocides, armed roberys, and home invations and armed rapes. Protect yourself, or your family with one of those illegal fire arms and you go to prison.
These countries and the left wing cry babies in them are puzzled as to how this could have gone so wrong when it is obvious to all but those with brains that this scheme should have worked.
Well, as was totally predictable, the bad guys did not turn in their guns, and after the big turn in was over, there was a 90% chance that any victim would be unarmed. So for criminals, a gun free scociety is a playground of 5 year old girls with big bags of money on their backs. Easy pickins you might say.
Would you like to try it? Put big signs in your yard stating your house is gun free.
Make sure your family is at mothers house, and your life insurance is paid up.
This is what whole countries did.
So to avoid prison, when the bad guy shows up with his guns, You shoot him dead. Put his body in the trunk of his car and drive it 50 miles into the desert (outback). Wipe off the prints. Pour petral all over it and light it up. Cover your tracks back to the hard road and ride home with a friend, and fellow gun owner.
If you think that some more gun control is a cure for anything but anarchy you are a hazard to the American way of life.

Cool, it looks like we agree then. I don't see how people could have a problem with guns for hunting, even if they're handguns/assault rifles/etc. provided measures are taken to keep them out of the wrong hands - b/g checks/gunsafes. That's more or less how it is here, I'd call it effective gun control, and you're right 95% of police don't carry here. We've done this gun thread thing before anyway.
But yeah, I don't think anyone could have seen this coming, I think I heard on the radio that american homicides over the last 50 years are something in the order of hundreds of millions and out of that 500 were spree killings.
I'm sure you'll hear good news about your friends too, sorry to hear that all the same.
Your homocide figures for the USA are a little high. Hundreds of millions of people were not killed during WWII on all sides.
And odd as it may seem, with all of our guns, the safest place on earth is the USA.
I don't wonder if I will be shot in front of my family when I answer the door for being a catholic or a protistant.
There are more Irish here than in Ireland. And nearly none trying to get back to Ireland.
In the Dominican Republic, I was struck by two big items. A microscopic police department and a near lack of crime? How could that be possible. No gun laws, and no narcotics laws, and still no crime? Thats right. Walk into a store and buy any american made controlled substance and walk out. No RX, no nothing.
Every store has at least one uniformed armed guard, and nearly everyone carries a hand gun. If you choose to fry your brain, they don't care. If you want to hold up a store, knock yourself out. You might get inside and get your gun out, but you will not leave alive. Lots of Haitains used to go in and try to hold people up and steal drugs, but they are never seen again. So the bad guys either die in a hail of gunfire or they vanish.
Dosn't sound all that bad does it? A great place to visit. Great Italian and Chinese food. Lots of golf and racing. Many retired US Military living there. Most people speak english. Many modern casinos, and deep sea fishing.

Ha! Funny ****, they JUST passed a law in Missouri to carry a handgun. Imagine all the idiots coming into Illinois from St.Louis having a handgun on them. Ooops!
I am pretty much done with the whole subject, I will be going back and forth with somebody, and I have said what I wanted to say about guns. I hate them.

How did Canada get added to a list where "All the guns have been confiscated and violent crime has exploded!"?
This is completely false, not even close. Our miniscule amount of gun crime is committed almost exclusively with handguns smuggled from the USA. ANYONE who thinks the US is safer than Canada is completely out of their mind. Detroit and Toronto are a 4 hour drive apart, run your own comparison.
Our own most recent school shooting was committed by a nut job who purchased firearms legally through our own increased gun control laws. Why was he allowed to purchased this weapon? What is it's purpose? You can't hunt anything legally with it. Here he is posing with it, among other photos he posted online before the shooting.

I'm reading this as "we don't have mental checks, they're too much hassle - so we're just gonna go ahead and give people the benefit of the doubt."
Are you sure about this? Perhaps they train in France, but rifles and shotguns (even handguns under certain conditions as far as I know) are certainly are permitted in the UK.
Not quite true, one of the biggest stories of the year here was about a man who shot someone trespassing, he walked out of the court a free man. In fairness he nearly did time, but he did shoot the man dead and in the back while he was running away. As for paying a terrible price, I'd like to see where you're getting your information from. Even if incidents have increased, what has that got to do with guns, and what would it prove anyway, are you saying the states haven't experienced an increase in these things?
Ok it's arguable that in recent years we've experienced a rise in gun related deaths, but these have more or less all been gang related, the people getting shot aren't your average innocent bystanders, they're people that generally go killed for a good reason, and would have been known by the local police. Joe soap walking down the street still has nothing to worry about. If I put a sign up in my front garden saying that there was no guns inside, people would just say "so what, I probably could have told you that". And as a matter of fact they'd be wrong - there are 3 guns with ammo at home.
In Ireland it's pretty much a given that the bad guy that shows up hasn't got a gun because a) he's not going to need one, and b) he won't risk the hefty automatic sentence that comes with carrying. As well as that by no means are you guaranteed a prison sentence for shooting someone in self defence, like I mentioned in the case above, actually the guy he shot didn't even have a gun.
"Gun control" depending on your defenition does not equal anarchy. I would agree that making guns harder to get in the states is not going to solve anything alone - IMO the problem lies more with peoples attitude towards guns, but how can you say making a better attempt to keep guns out of the wrong hands is ever a bad thing??
Looking at it you might be right, but calling the US the safest place on earth? odd is a bit of an understatement, explain where you came up with that please.
Neither do I or have I ever, and I'm a protestant living in a catholic area, I've been to some of the roughest parts in the north and same story. You'd get a hiding for wearing the wrong soccer jersey but noone ever worries about getting shot.
Find me one of those "Irish" that has chosen not to move back for any reason that has anything to do with guns.
It is worrisome that there is no knowledge of history being taught on either side of the pond. When the Orangemen march each year, what is it that they celibrate? When the IRA killed thousands since 1924 why were they so upset? Why were (are) there walls between Catholic and Protistant areas? Why is there a standing British army in Ireland?
How about this. There is a very active underground railway for illegals between Irland and the US in general with the biggest numbers turning up in Boston Mass. Do those people want to go to Ireland.
The crime rates for all forms of crime has fallen in the 34 states that allow the concealed carry of firearms.
FBI uniform crime reports. Pick any year and look at the stats. The most dangerous place in the USA?
With the highest murder rate in the whole country, Washington DC. No fire arms of any kind allowed.
After cleaning up the messes made by gun toting criminals, check that. Lets call them what they are. Animals. They prey on the weak and undefended, the very old and very young. They are everywhere on earth where guns are allowed and where they are not.
If I were in charge I would require fire arms ownership and training for all citizens. Imagine if every hold up artist were shot dead or dreadfully wounded during each attempt. Imagine every rapist shot in the crotch on every attempt. Imagine every towel head shot dead while trying to plant a bomb near a bus stop.
There will always be that 10% that never gets the word on anything, but in the big picture crime rates drop everywhere its tried.
In jolly old england no police carried guns. They were to blow their whistles when crime was afoot. How, you ask would this deter crime?
Every citizen was required to assist the Bobby with whatever weapon they had at hand. Bring dirk, dagger,
sword and club and powder and ball, but assist you must, or face the docket with the criminal. And if assist the Bobby you did, a few coins in reward from the kings own coffers.
Came a long way from those days didn't you?
So now the unarmed citizen cowers defenseless while the Bobby scarcely gets his or her whistle to their lips before being beaten sensless or worse.
There are those who can see it and those who cannot.
