V-8 In An Rx-7???
#51
almost every major manufacturer has had a rotary development team over the years, and if they did not, they are now owned by a company that did at one point. some people think that a v8 does not belong in an rx7, well, does that mean a 13b does not belong in a datsun 510? no one gets mad about that **** who the **** cares? too often, too many people get too up tight about that ****...it is childish to get "flaming" mad at someone on the internet over something soo trivial.
like the above states......if the owner likes it..............and so on....
as for the 4 rotor corvette, if anyone has seen it in person, like in the museum in bowling green, KY......the thing is HUGE......

ughhh!!! ive been reading this and i was thinking of doing the V8 conversion till now. My 88 SE has an auto tranny now today it started slipping and staying stuck in 2nd and I said well for the money im going to spend putting a manual tranny in my car(Hydraulics, Flywheel, tranny, pedal, clucth) I could probably do the V8 conversion and still have money left over. The thing about the rx-7's is that everything costs an arm and a leg like the Idel control valve $599 that is not fun. for $599 i can get a whole 350 engine. Belive me guys i love the rotaries and there potential in infinite but evrey thing is so expensive. I bet i will at least spend $1500 on the tranny swap at least to put my car manual and that will only make me a little bit quicker now put a fresh 350 or 5.0 V8 in there than BAMN ! ! ! ! Im one of the cars on the street not to mess with. If worst comes to worst and i see that the tranny swap will be to much money V8 she goes.
BTW any one got any estimates of how much a tranny swap costs???

OK... one i got 2 silables for all the people knockin on this kid.. "De-Caf"
Relax.. he's sticking a V-8 in his RX-7 even though after the V-8 swap it will ciese to be a TRUE RX-7 until a 13b is re-installed... Quoting someone else ,who i can't remember to to lack of sleep and excesive alcohol consumption, it's like giving a corvette a body transplant since i guess the engine, powerplant, would be the soul of the car. Another comparison would be to take Arnold Schuatesticlies! ******* howerver you spell his last name's mind and sticking it in Bruce Lee
It's similar, although not the same, and this is just to give some people an idea of what i'm talking about since tomorrow i'm sure i won't have a clue, this is similar to someone having a 2nd gen and sticking a 3rd gen engine in it. In this case it's still an RX-7 it's just not a TRUE 2nd gen it's like taking Bruce Lee's mind and sticking it in Brandon Lee (that's his sons name right?)
similar but not the same.
So by saying this should a stuck up pure blood doesn't like 3rd gen 2nd gen owner start talking **** to the guy that did the 3rd gen engine swap

Look... I've been thinking about doing a swap. The costs do add up if u want to complete a v8.
engine:
block, heads, pistons, lifters.... if you get an old engine ur gonna have to check all that stuff out, and it may need machining.
mounting kit:
the kit is gonna cost u like 500 at a minium... personally i'd like to have air conditioning and that is expensive.
but the transmission:
a Borg Warner WC T5 tranny will run you alot. Its not a typical chevy tranny. They are definately not as common as the automatic powerglides or T350's. The trick w/them is they aren't rated for very much power so its possible to destroy it w/torque easily. The other concerns... bellhousing, shifter, etc... It all adds up. If you want to go six speed (which would be amazing) it gets really expensive.
Cars cost money, I don't have any. If you can afford it, and you really take your time balancing the car... GO FOR IT!!! It'll be fast as hell and sound amazing. Nothing like a v8 in the morning, but balancing it is gonna be a pain. check weights on each wheel, cuz its more than front and back distribution. side to side is where it messes up the weight mostly. Thats why people find the major loss of handeling.
Goodluck, i'm still not sure which way i'm going to go.
if you do decide to convert it... I want pics.
peace,

Personally I like the idea of the swap. I'm starting a business up and I will need a car to showcase the product. I'll be attending import and domestic car shows. With that in mind my RX-7 won't be taken seriously at some of the hot rod domestic shows unless I do something that will attract the attention of that crowd. Dropping an LS-1 w/6-speed would definetly attract attention to the car then I can show them the product I'm selling(custom leather seat covers if your interested). Now at events like NOPI I wouldn't dare take a domestic car or my wifes SUV to it. My RX-7 is still the best choice even though it has a 325HP V8 in it I can keep the hood shut unless someone ask and then I'll suprise them.
Now you can call me a traitor all you want but I know I'm not. My autocross car is still rotary powered and I'm considering buying another one(convertible).
