Im going to document the progress of an REW swap in my 90 GTU here. As of tonight, the motor mounts are done, just need to be cleaned and painted. Im waiting on a rear counterweight, then I can put my flywheel and clutch on, and drop the engine in the car.
https://www.nopistons.com/forums/gal...134_829528.jpg https://www.nopistons.com/forums/gal...134_667182.jpg Im going to use the stock twins, simply because its whats available to me. Same for the stock ecu, although I am going to use an AIC to take care of some extra fuel and possibly water injection. |
Just replace that flywheel...https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

adam your creativity amazes me sometimes... BUY CF PARTS FROM THIS GUY! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png
Why do you think Im waiting on a counterweight? Ive got this nice 8 lb flywheel collecting dust, waiting. |
I'm next in line for a CF UIM and TB elbow for my Cosmo motor. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif
I'd like to see what Jims thinks about this...but since he's gone... |
Cool - we've just started mounting my engine with inch box too - that looks pretty good, I like the sleeves.
Mark |
i kinda like the motor mounts
|
The engine is in, and I cant believe how well everything fits, most notable the FD 3" downpipe. Its looks very very close to bolting up to my RB turbo back where the fc downpipe bolts to the silencer. I was hoping the exhaust would be easy, but I never expected it to be this close. Mounts fit perfectly and everything associated with the stock twins has plenty of room.
Anyways, heres the pics. Just dont tell me that my UIM is green. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/gal..._144_21575.jpg https://www.nopistons.com/forums/gal..._144_66905.jpg https://www.nopistons.com/forums/gal...144_530892.jpg https://www.nopistons.com/forums/gal...144_420942.jpg https://www.nopistons.com/forums/gal...144_687539.jpg https://www.nopistons.com/forums/gal...144_234179.jpg |
damn adam its looking freaking awesome so far... ur right it does fit in there nicely... lol
|
looks good so far
|
wow. you could probably sell those motor mounts now. she should be a nice beast when complete. why did you choose to swap the rew in? just had it available?
wow. you could probably sell those motor mounts now. she should be a nice beast when complete. why did you choose to swap the rew in? just had it available?
Im already a step ahead of you, just trying to get a website up. I chose the REW for a number of reasons, but availability had a lot to do with it. Its also a solid block with extra bracing around the upper downel pin area, and an oiling system on par with most race-prepped motors fc motors. And then sequential twins. |
So I'm not pointing it out (since you already did,) but why's your UIM green and did you do it yourself? If you did, what did you use to color it?
|
The green is mold release compound. Im in the middle of making a mold for feed style UIM covers, but I had to put the UIM back on the car to put the engine in since the lift eye is on the UIM.
If you wanted to tint metallic pieces, mix some color in with clearcoat and spray that onto the piece. The ratio of color to clear will determine how much it tints whatever you painted. |
Those mounts look very nice...but shouldn't they be braced to the rear iron higher up? Like the way the stock RE mounts bolt onto the rear iron half-way up.....at least thats the way it is on my buddies Cosmo RE motor.
Why? These mounts are still stronger than they need to be. Not to mention that there isnt anything to secure it to, and no room to secure it on the pass side. And both FD mounts and the pass side fc mount attach only to the bottom of the irons, and I have yet to see the metal part of any of those engine mounts fail. |
Yeah ok....I wasn't saying that they will break.
|
Nice work, looks like it went together in a hurry too.
I thought that car was nothing more than soon to be history, I guess twins will do that to ya'! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png |

Ive got a million little things left to do. Mostly wiring and plumbing, and new radiator, oil cooler, and IC mounts, and ducting. |
adam your a sexy bitch and so is your car.

Why was I not informed about this project
you tell me about all your projects but not this one we are officially broken up Isn't making bolt-ons fun? You just made BOLT ON FD ENGINE!!! Nice work man, really! |

I felt so abandoned! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif For what its worth, this project has not been in the works for very long at all. Around a week actually, and Im going to mount the rest of the exhaust and hopefully the radiator and oil coolers tomorrow. |
OHHHYEAHHHHI'MONLYTWELEVE!!!

That's a motor from a Jspec FD.
oh, nice work BTW. Wanna make me a set of motor mounts? |

If it really is, I may need to go pay a "visit" to the guy who I got it from... More than happy to make a set of mounts for you, and for anyone else. Heres the thread I posted in the for sale section offering these mounts. |

badassed adam, great work.
can't wait to see those cf "UIM Cozies" |
Well if that's the original downpipe, at least the downpipe is from a jspec FD. The downpipe has a divit on the side of it to allow for the steering column to clear.
|
Okay, after looking at the downpipe, it looks to be an aftermarket one...possibly HKS? Either way, that downpipe was made for jspec FD...so my assumption that the motor is jspec is flawed
|
The downpipe is definately aftermarket, is that divit th eonly thing that made you think its a j-spec engine?
|
The downpipe is definately aftermarket, is that divit th eonly thing that made you think its a j-spec engine?
Yep. After that, there are no differences as far as engine. If the wiring harness is routed towards your driver's side, then that's a giveaway as well. |
The "divit" in the DP is not there for the steering shaft... ALL FD's DP's have that divet, because that is were it pass's the frame, it only have about a 1/4" clearance. The steering shaft passes threw an indention in the frame on either side, and the indent is on both sides of the frame whether is is JDM/USDM.... The DP means nothing!
Yeah, and JDM engines have no emissions.... (or no AVCR's, and EGR's.... as if that's new https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...R ) |

A Petttit downpipe will not fit a JDM car. I HAVE TRIED. My HKS one will. If the steering column wasn't there, I would have WAY more than 1/4". Probably over an inch of clearance between the frame rail. |
**Goes and looks at car...**
Ohhh, nevermind, my bad https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif Yeah, but that still doesn't mean it's a JDM engine https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/happy.png That acctually looks like a stock cast part, but I remember seeing an aftermarket DP with a cast upper part.... But yeah, maybe they just bought a DP off of ebay.... |
Yeah, I actually mentioned that in one of my previous posts that I jumped to conclusions about the motor. The US and Japanese motors are identical anyways. It's the UIM/LIM/dp/wiring harness that are different.

Little bit of progress today. Mocked up the radiator and oil coolers, just need to weld the mounts(piece of cake).
https://www.nopistons.com/forums/gal...144_179501.jpg Ill be removing the 2 cross braces for airflow reasons, and replacing with a single, stronger piece, farther forward. You can also see the second oil cooler, a stock FD piece on the drivers side brake duct. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/gal...144_531068.jpg Im ready to hang the RB turbo back exhaust, as soon as the exhaust hangers come on(wednesday). I cant wait to see how close the RB presilencer flange will be to the fd downpipe flange. Im sure its going to be close, just how much is the question. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/gal...144_210130.jpg |
You're making me want that car
