You just wait. Im inspired to show off.

with that oil cooler there do you plan on using different lights or does it just look like the stockers wont fit from the pics?

I havent test fittes the lights(not mounted that oil cooler yet either), but I really wouldnt mind an excuse to scrap the stock flip up lights and go with something flush mounted.

RE87FC 09-12-2005 10:37 PM

I like the way you have that rad. set up, but can I ask why you chose to do that? I have seen kits that make the rad. sit straight up and down for better cooling, but I don't know what diff. it makes. What are you doing for an intercooler?

mazdaspeed7 09-12-2005 10:44 PM

Im leaning towards an air to water IC, with a heat exchanger in the pass side brake duct.

As for why I positioned the radiator and oil cooler(s) like I did, its all about the cooling. The majority of cooling is done by the first 2" in the airs path. As the air draws heat from the radiator, etc, it heats up. When you have more than one heat exchanger(radiator, oil cooler, a/c condenser, etc) stacked up, each one is heating the air before it even gets to the next one. That might be worthwhile when space is more important than cooling, but to me, with this engine, cooling is of the utmost importance. The stock twins put a lot of stress on the cooling system(think FD reliability), and I want a reliable car in a hot climate. I dont want to have to park my car when the air gets over 80 degrees, I dont want to have to worry in traffic, etc. I want a real car. One you can get in and drive, and enjoy, without worrying about whats going to break next.

I will be doing a lot of ducting work to ensure proper and adequate airflow, and will have a vented hood as well.

RE87FC 09-12-2005 10:51 PM

Well, makes a lot of sense, thanks! Can;t wait to see the finished project. BTW, I made a experimental water/air I/C out of a stock TII I/C a couple of years ago just to see if I could and what it would do and it worked really well. I wouldn't suggest that small of a core for your app, but it looks like you have some good fab skills, maybe you could make your own?

Ive considered using 2 fc cores, but it would take up more room than I want. Im leaning more towards a commercial core for space reasons.

On a side note, Im still pushing a friend of mine to convert his stock IC (TII) into an air to water IC in the stock location. The stock fc IC flows well, its just hampered by piss poor ducting below the core, as well as the simply fact its sitting above a hot engine.

I love the placement of the coolers and such, seems like the job would be easier, flow wise, if the rows matched the angle of the installed rad and cooler.

Aftermarket snout i'm assuming?

Ill definately situate the ducting to optomize flow with the angle of the coolers.

As for the front bumper, not just aftermarket, but...

Only problem is if you ever got in a small fender bender. You can kiss that rad/ oil cooler good bye. Where as the stock setup it will live.

ColinRX7 09-16-2005 10:18 AM

If that's the worst thing about the new radiator/oil cooler setup, consider yourself lucky, Adam.

Im reworking the bumper support in the front for some extra crash protection. And theres still 7" between the bumper skin and the most forward part of the radiator.

Another plus is the ground clearance Im going to gain in the front. The lowest point is still a couple of inches above the bottom of the subframe.

Should I keep this thread pertaining to just the REW swap, or the build of the rest of the car as well?

that rad setup is, for the sake of corniness, rad.

interested in these TB elbows and FD UIM Covers.

might as well do the whole car

mazdaspeed7 09-24-2005 06:10 PM

Since the factory cross braces were blocking so much of the airflow with how i have the radiator sitting, I decided they need to go. So I scrapped the stock radiator support as well and welded in a new radiator support that ties into all 4 frame rails in the front of the car. This bumper support should protect the radiator should I get in a minor front end colission, as well as make the front of the car much stronger overall. There is no flex in the front of the car whatsoever now. Removing the factory bracing and such also frees me from having to use the stock mounting points for the front edge of the fenders and the bumper, and gives me more freedom in redesigning the front end.

Heres where Im at now, still undecided on whether the headlight mounts will be staying or going. I need to do some drawing and take some measurements first.

Yeah, they got rid of the bracing where the fc has it and put it all at the very front of the car.

rowtareh 09-26-2005 01:21 PM

that thing is trick. that gives me alot of neat ideas. looks really good, and you are selling the GTU when you are done with this swap?

VaGambler 10-07-2005 09:04 PM

Ok mazdaspeed7, we need an update on how things are going .

Everything is looking great

VaGambler 10-07-2005 09:05 PM

by the way where is the link to your engine mounts ???

Heres the link for the mounts

Ive been making some progress with it, but not very much visible at the moment. Im trying to finalize the design of the body work so I can move forward and actually start it. Heres the current state though.

have you figured out how your going to mount the bumper?

One of the design issues I need to work through before I progress is going to be the division between the fenders, hood, and bumper, seeing as all will be custom or at least highly modified stock(fenders). The ducting needs to be worked out with the design as well so the vents function properly and flow with the rest of the design.

short answer: everything is going to have new mounts anyways, but those will be worked out after the bodywork is fiberglassed.

1Revvin7 10-25-2005 10:08 PM

Cool.

alpineracer 11-06-2005 12:47 PM

this is definitely a swap that i will be considering for my fc, keep all the updates coming!

mazdaspeed7 11-06-2005 08:52 PM

Going kinda slowly lately, hopefully I can put a little more time into it in the not so distant future.

alpineracer 11-07-2005 11:17 AM

just wondering and sorry in advance if this is a stupid question. what tranny are you using? and also what rear end? i ask because as i have stated above i am starting to think very seriously about this swap and since my car is na right now and needs a new tranny anyways i am going to be getting a new tranny and i also need an lsd so i will most likely get a turbo rear end. does that sound about right?

mazdaspeed7 11-07-2005 12:02 PM

The transmission, driveshaft, rear end, halfshafts and such are all S5 TII. I installed those a while ago. The TII clutch kit will bolt up to an FD flywheel, or you can use an aftermarket flywheel with either a s5 or S6 rear counterweight, as they are the same. The engine bolts right up to the TII trans(or any rotary transmission for that matter).

If you are going to do the transmission swap, you will need the transmission, starter, clutch slave cylinder, driveshaft, diff, and halfshafts from a TII at a minimum, unless you get a custom driveshaft made to keep the n/a differential, which I do not recommend with any turbo swap.

VaGambler 01-29-2006 01:27 PM

ok bud its 1-29-06 any news about your swap ????? . im building my FD today and making plans to install it in my FC

Thanks

mazdaspeed7 02-11-2006 06:31 PM

Havent had time to work on the car. Too many paying projects and other responsibilities.

mazdaspeed7 02-23-2006 12:40 AM

I added the swap mounts to my site finally. Click the picture in my sig to view it. More stuff coming in the future too.

rotary_owns_all 03-03-2006 08:48 PM

i thought about dropping a fd engine into my fc, and it's tranny... though never got around to it... and im glad somebody is actually putting the fd twin-sequential turbo engine into a fc. it's going to be a wickedly awesome ride when you're done. make sure you finish it, and keep us updated for us who would like to do the same thing. good luck.
