There have been a few companies making fixed headlights, but I dont think any of them ever really took off. Teknics has the RE kit, but you have to have the bumper as well with those.



As for the project, I didnt have the time nor money to finish it at the time. And since then, the car and almost all of my fc parts have been sold. My bike is just about finished up now, so there may be another rx7 in my future.

I love the approach your taking to this swap. I read this the other night when trouble shooting my engine problem and saw this thread. I like the idea of laying over the radiator FD style. Do you have any further progress pics?



With the engine mount, why not make it solid across? Sort of a cradle for the engine to sit on, it would make the mount so much more rigid. It is a work of art though.

The original one I made was one piece, but I decided it was overkill. For starters, it took 2 lbs of MIG wire to complete. I also had a hard time keeping it from warping as I was welding it. These 2 piece mounts are much less labor intensive, and fit better. There is no way Id be able to make a one piece mount work at anywhere near the pricing I have the 2 piece ones set at. And btw, the mounts have been updated somewhat since that picture. The current ones have some extra bracing, and fit a little better(new jig).



As for the stiffness thing, these mounts contact the center iron at the oil pan rail. Any twisting of the engine transfers the force to the center iron, instead of twisting the mounts. Ill put up a pic to show this next time I make a set.



The car itself is gone. Parted out. The project was snowballing out of control, and I had more important matters to deal with. There should be a number of these swaps popping up though, Ive sold around 2 dozen sets of these mounts.

What we did with my car. It wraps around and makes a cradle for the engine to drop into. or, as we do it, its bolted to the engine 1st.



When you start making big power it helps a lot to support the engine. Although I did break an engine mount, I am not sure if it was from repeated abuse when I lent it out at a driving school or when I let a nation champion SCCA driver take me for a spin in my car in Homestead. His downshifts were beyond violent but he taught me a lot about what my car was capable of and I realized I was driving it at 60% its potential. Yes, you can run down 430's and pass them. They need to learn their place on the track. LOL!! But, he drove the car so hard it was scary. When we pulled the engine out, overheated it to 280° that weekend, the bracket was bent and the engine mounts and tranny mounts were all broken. The car gets driven VERY hard.

How thick was the metal your mount was made of? I always liked the design of your mounts, but I was somewhat concerned about how it would react to the stresses. With it not being boxed in, it loses strength very quickly as it deforms. I made the arms on mine from 2 pieces of square tubing to function sorta like an I beam. Metal is relatively weak in bending strength, but strong in compression/tension. Its the basis of the strength of an I beam. Nearly all of the forces act on the upper and lower surface when bending loads are applied. Thats where I beams have the most material. The center section is to keep the upper and lower surfaces tied together to prevent deforming. But when the piece does deform, it loses strength, because the forces are not primarily tension/compression.



For every ft lb of torque the engine makes, it can impart that same amount of torque on the engine mounts.

The mounts in the pictures in the beginning of this thread were my prototype mounts, so I took a few pics of the current design. I described how the mounts contact the center iron, so any loading that would twist the mounts will transmit the force to the center iron at the oil pan rail previously, but the prototype mounts didnt have that feature. Also, some bracing has been added. You can also see my jig which ensures each set of mounts will match up prefectly to the fc engine mounts.

Mines running, I made my own mount setup, very stable, the halbridge has less rock than it did with the FC motor and mounts. I grafted the emissions harness's into the car, so its basically FD from the firewall forward. And the sensor check fuction is working as well. Its not a bad swap , its just all the little things that need to be done, like water pump inlet angling, change oil lines, etc etc. My car was a big single car, so I had done away with alot of the stock FD and FC stuff anyway which means fabricating new things to hold aftermarket stuff.. I have no rats nest whatsoever, I made adapters for the FD primary fuel rail to 8-an connections, boost and pre throttle aid distribution blocks and stuff like that, which just takes time.. A stock FD setup would drop in pretty fast..

The 13B-REW will fit with all OEM accessories, including the stock twins. The transmission should fit just fine, but I used a TII transmission. I prefer the push type clutch assembly on the 2nd gen trans over the pull type on the 3rd gen trans. The only real difference between S5 TII and FD transmissions are the addition of dual cone synchros on 1st and 2nd gear(I believe, its been a while though), and the previously mentioned clutch. I havent measured, so I cant be 100% sure the shifter will be in the proper spot with the 3rd gen trans.

I just placed my order but if you could help me with some other stuff I need to buy. I have the full motor trani front mount Intercooler and mounts now not sure off hand what else I need but if someone could give me a list and where I can get all of it would be great...
