im interested in finding out about an idea i had - whether or not there were any fwd gearboxes which mated up to a 12/13b.



the reason i ask (hold your flames!!) is to find out if i can fit one in the back of an aw11 mr2.

I had thought there was one, Japan only, mid 70's, very rare - why wouldn't you rather use a custom bellhousing with your excellent stock tranny?

there was an early 70 fwd roatary, but the 13a was very different from a regular 12a/13b, they had one at sevenstock, it didnt have a motor or tranny in it, thats how rare its gonna be, and then it wont fit in your car anyways

the mr2 is not front wheel drive. and if the engine turns the same way, which i think they do, then youd need a custom bellhousing. and maybe, just maybe it might work.



as far as the front wheel drive rotary, wasnt it mid 60s even before the cosmo sport that mazda came out with the Luce?

Hey treceb, that rocket was also known as the RX-87 or R130 here in Aus. Hey nick, funny you ask, I friend and I have been playing with a 85 323 fwd shell to try[just one of things us Aussie mechanics get up too when there's no work left in the shop] and fit up a FWD setup. Obviously our main problem is the box at the moment ,but a few adapter/plates should get us closer. I'll keep you posted if we have any luck.Sorry the MR2 isn't Fwd.

 

Not a bad idea. The biggest problem I can see is the width of the rotary at the crank centreline. Pistons are wide at the head & narrow around the crank, but rotors have the 'crank' dead centre. This would put the engine or exhaust in the way of the driveshafts as most FWD trans I have seen run the driveshafts close to the block. I guess the motor could sit above a trans & drive thru dropper gears (like old Minis etc do, only done properly!) We have a car called a Magna here (Mitsubishi), the V6 trans has the driveshafts well offset, maybe enuff.
