im about to get a 89-91 TII. im gonna get one with a blown engine and swap in a rebuild or j-spec. after the basic mods, im thinking bout getting a better ecu. i dont know that much bout this subject i was wondering if you guys could answer some questions. i heard haltech was the best. is this true? what other options are there? after i put it in will i need to change it everytime i add more mods? should i leave this as one of the last mods? what restictions will this make, if any? what are the advantages? thats about it for now thanks for any help.

 

Typically you'll want to adjust your fuel/ignition maps when you add mods. The great benefit of a standalone ECU is that it will allow you to run just about any setup, but you probably can wait until you get a turbo upgrade. Haltech is a popular option, but there are other ECU's out there.

 

haltech is gonna provide the best bang for the buck(hopefully not bang from your engine) and the most support.

 

The ideal thing would be to make a prgrammable ECU one of your first mods. This way you can carefully tune your car as you upgrade. This way you are sure to get the most potential out of each mod.

Also haltech let's you hook it up to the stock compents and it works. No extra hardware, just wire it up to the stock CAS, COILs, injectors, coolant and air sensor, and tps.



I would recommend using the haltech air sensor as the mazda stock air sensor doesn't have much of resolution and doesnt' give the right temp with the haltech. I also recomend the haltech tps which also gives you best resolution and throttle responce.



There are better systems out there but a lot of them need extra hardware like a crank wheel for timming and their own ingnition coils which cost extra.



I would say, haltech has the biggest support when you are in trouble.
