Agreed that it's not a good idea for the above listed reasons.
For all the other weaknesses that the FD had, transmissions are the exception. Think about it, how often do you hear of guys putting 400+ whp to them ...and how rare is it that the transmission lets goes first.

yeah its the 6 speed miata tranny. oh and its a ton more work to drive on the street! 6th gear is lower than the fd's 5th, so it spins faster on the freeway, basically you're in 6th at 40mph, so instead of being in 3rd in like the fd, you have to shift 3 more gears in the rx8. the rx8 tranny is wonderful on the track though, theres a gear for every corner
... Just because it has 6 gears does not mean that the overdrive gear ratio is higher then a 5speed.

I would like a 6 speed too, but with better gearing then the 8's tranny. Any one know here you can get a good after amrket one, Grex makes one but they run from 7,500-9,500 dollars. Guru makes a 5 speed dog box and it's around 9.5k too. I blew 3'rd out of my rebuilt stock tranny and now i have a used stock tranny. I woudl deff be interested in a dog box if i coudl find something liek that for around 3.5k

The 6th gear will not lower your cruising RPM's. You would have to change final drive/gear ratios. In my 8 I am cruising at just over 4000 rpms at 80 mph. Personally I find this ridiculous as my FD get better highway mileage cruing around 3000 rpms.

6th gear is not that great. I would rather have a 5 speed in my celica, my 1st gear is obsolete after you start moving. i cant downshift to it without doing a complete revmatch, it wont even notch into gear. And with 6th i have no power...but then again im only working with 180 horses 
Im with everyone else, most 6 speed trannies are weak, just look at the silvia s15 6 speed, people try and match that up with sr20det's and they just break its stupid.
