you can use the same crap they use for plastic body parts as a primer, as long as the primer bonds you can use just about any paint over it

any bumper "cladding" will work for a primer

Bulldog works nice, is cheap and easy to spray, remains flexible as well, its pretty much the choice of professional upholstery shops

comes in aeresol, quarts, gallons

I would definitely wipe all the stuff off with some lacquer thinner or denatured alcohol to get them clean.

Good luck! Watch out for those fish eyes! Use a stiff bristled brush on the plastics too, soap and water and/or a solvent based thinner. If the 3rd gen stuff is at all like the 2nd gen those low spots in the "textured" plastics are where all the fish eye causing debris likes to hide.

edit: post pics too, please!

grey or gold scotchbrite pad soaked in some prep sol not only scuffs the surface but it cleans the contaminents off as well

FikseRxSeven 07-02-2005 08:34 PM

everything except the dash is now completely stripped, took about an hour and a half taking out the seats to removing the carpet....

i didn't take out the dash, i just cut the carpet as far into the console as i could..... a sharp utility knife goes through the carpet and carpet backing very easily.

only annoying problem i came accross was all of the hairy fibers left by the insulation, most of it comes off with the carpet though.

What kind of rug are you using to replace the old stuff? some cut pile, factory stuff?

FikseRxSeven 07-02-2005 09:01 PM

this is what i got...

Interesting...

I would run down to the home depot and grab some carpet pad to put down in the high foot traffic spots before you lay the rug, it will help to hide some of the floor pan details. The black rug will still stretch over the pad when you glue it, glue the pad pieces in first then overlay the rug, just a thought, unless you are replacing with factory spec stuff later.
