taking out the rear bins, installing a roll cage, and changing over to black via the cheap way.... im gunna dye the leather/vinyl and plastic, and fit a stretchable type of carpet where the tan one used to be.
damn wish i had enough free time to rip out an interior and put it back together in 9 days. damn this crazy work schedule. kevin. |
If you want the carpet swap to look good you have to pull the dash. Otherwise it will look like a hack job. Most of the stuff pops right out. You should not have any problems. I speak from experience when I tell you that dyes and paint will noty hold up. Your seriously better off getting the actual black parts from Fritz Flynn or someone else. The paint will scratch off super easy (and I did alot of prep work to try avoiding that) The dye's, I don't know. The **** rubs off on your hands and clothes and makes a mess. Maybe you will have better luck but I did about a good a job trying as anyone could possibly do and in the end I just bought the real parts.
Good luck with it. |
yeah i remember when you did that to your interior.... and i kept that in mind, i have been looking forever for the black parts but no luck, i ended up with a passenger door panel, divider and bins, so i figured that these door panels and plastics will be thrown away after i get all the black stuff, and finally decided that dyes and paints will have to do for now cuz rotorfest is around the corner.
like i said.... we shall see how this turns out come rotorfest https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png dave... what brand dye's did you use, cuz i spoke to someone that works with leather and apholstery for a living and he recommended SEM |
ooooh, am i going to meet the notorious fikse?
i thought your interior was black already? but i have never really seen alot of interior pictures, or just never paid attention. |
We pulled ours, hardest part of course is the main dash, the rest of it is a breeze. Work from the back to the front.
|
hahahahha... you never saw pics of my interior, cuz i make it a point not to show it... its tan and dusty and dirty and messy
|
That is exactly what brand I used. It didn't hold up on anything excepet the door panels. The door panels came out the best. It will not stick on the hard plastics though like the vents etc. Same with the bins and side panels. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/index.php?...&hl=door+panels |

make sure they are clean and scuffed good, hope you make it in time for RF.
Remember- multiple thin coats are better then heavy ones |

I wouldn't use a bomb can dye either, better off using a plastic bond primer and paint, followed with a compatible clear. If you armor-all-ed or dressed them the prep will be extensive. |
you can use the same crap they use for plastic body parts as a primer, as long as the primer bonds you can use just about any paint over it
any bumper "cladding" will work for a primer Bulldog works nice, is cheap and easy to spray, remains flexible as well, its pretty much the choice of professional upholstery shops comes in aeresol, quarts, gallons |
I used bulldog, good stuff.
I would definitely wipe all the stuff off with some lacquer thinner or denatured alcohol to get them clean. |
thanks for the tips guys.. i have 3 days to do this... starting now
wish me luck |

wish me luck
Good luck! Watch out for those fish eyes! Use a stiff bristled brush on the plastics too, soap and water and/or a solvent based thinner. If the 3rd gen stuff is at all like the 2nd gen those low spots in the "textured" plastics are where all the fish eye causing debris likes to hide. edit: post pics too, please! |
grey or gold scotchbrite pad soaked in some prep sol not only scuffs the surface but it cleans the contaminents off as well
|
everything except the dash is now completely stripped, took about an hour and a half taking out the seats to removing the carpet....
i didn't take out the dash, i just cut the carpet as far into the console as i could..... a sharp utility knife goes through the carpet and carpet backing very easily. only annoying problem i came accross was all of the hairy fibers left by the insulation, most of it comes off with the carpet though. |
What kind of rug are you using to replace the old stuff? some cut pile, factory stuff?
|
|
Interesting...
I would run down to the home depot and grab some carpet pad to put down in the high foot traffic spots before you lay the rug, it will help to hide some of the floor pan details. The black rug will still stretch over the pad when you glue it, glue the pad pieces in first then overlay the rug, just a thought, unless you are replacing with factory spec stuff later. |
i bought padding to even out the floor and to insulate my feet from the heat. and winter driving. i also bought some aerosol adhesive spray to make things a lil easier.
im thinking of maybe gluing a plastic peice or something aluminum for under the driver foot so the carpet wont get worn out so easily... |
I used a double layer of dyna-mat under the driver and passenger sides before I put the pad down. That scotch spray glue works great, spray 90 or 77 or whatever it's called, once the glue stops bubbling its ready to go. I have the cut-pile replica of the original in my car, it isn't the greatest quality so I just bought some thick woven wool floor mats for temp. use. Which reminds me, my upholstery guy never delivered my new floor mats, that was like last year, gotta go bang on his door tuesday morning. |
thanks for the idea.... i dynamatted the rear of the car and where the bins used to be to reduce road noise.... i guess i should do the floor also.
i have 120sq. ft. of it, and i used 20sq ft to do the trunk and bins... lol |

Using unmolded carpet might be a pain when trying to avoid wrinkles and what not. Pics?!
