My power antenna has never worked on my FD since I bought it 2 years ago. Well, I finally got around to trouble shooting it today. When I got to it, I found that it wasn't even plugged in. I plugged it in and turn the battery & radio on (after market Pioneer DEH-P20 CD/Radio). Well, I quickly realized why it was unplugged. The antenna goes up no problems, but when it is funny extended it continues to click/grind as if the motor is still trying to make it go up. I turned the radio off and the antenna goes down fine. Is this something fixable or do I need a need antenna?

the antenna goes up and down using two plastic gear mechanisms, one on the antenna mast and one attached to the motor. As the RX7 gets older, the gears on the antenna sometimes break, giving you that grinding sound. You will need to purchase a new antenna mast and install it (somewhat tricky) or replace the whole unit (easier and guaranteed to work). PM me as we have both items available-

BTW- nice car-

My antenna has been acting the same way, so I pulled it out and disassembled it. Here's what i found.

Like qwester said, it was the mast part that was broken. There's a plastic "snake" with teeth on it (kinda looks like one of those old SSP toy race car's rip-cords) that's attached to the top end of the mast. This is how the antenna extends and retracts. That's what broke in my antenna. When it powers up, the antenna extends too far for the "snake" to engage with the gears of the antenna's motor, so it just spins and spins.

That's also why mine wouldn't go back down, because the mast wasn't engaging with the motor.

(for those of you that weren't born in the '70's , here's a pic of an SSP toy car and it's rip cord.)
