When downshifting, from 5th to 4th... like 50-60 mph... Car grinds 4th... Not BAD, but maybe 5 quick ticks as it goes in... Doesn't do it all the time, but quite often... ANy ideas?

thats not good. 5th gear is repairable by just removing the end of the tranny, but 4th requires the entire thing to be disassembled. you do have a few options

1. try to rev match the shift, or don't downshift into 4th

2. buy a new one, the whole tranny new is $2k,

the parts to rebuild it are $1200, the new one is properly assembled and has all the updates in it

3. rebuild it, if you are going to pay someone labor to take it all apart, you should replace all the seals, bearings, and synchro's, sure only 4th is bad now, but how are all the rest of the gears? might as well start them all fresh, yes?

4. take it apart and only replace the parts that are bad, its the same labor to rebuild the whole thing, so you just save on parts, and what if 2nd gear takes a crap 2 months from now?

only 2k for a new tranny? thats not terribly bad i guess... my 5th gear synchro is gone also, i've heard you can do it without disassembling the whole thing and the synchro is 30$... any links on how to do that?

Well, I hope I don't have to rebuild the fawker. I am going to put synthetic in there and see if that helps.

Seems to have started after the shortshifter was installed... Maybe not.. I dunno..

5th is easy to get to, but you need the mazda puller set to remove the bearings. this is why you dont see it online anywhere. the synchro is $30, but the hubset that the broken synchro destroyed is $120...
