i would definetly check the alternator that the first thing that came to mind for me
We gave it a boost and nothing, that's why I didn't think of the alternator. Looks like we won't get to work on it until Monday. Also he had no warning at all, it just shut down. The same thing happened to me in a different car, or it can also be a malfuction in his intertrack system.

I've had a fuel pump die once and it sounds about the same. Worked fine one minute, then dead the next. Make sure to swap out the filter if you guys end up swapping the pump. Did you try pulling any codes?

If it was the alternator... every warning light on the dash would have lit up before his battery died. ABS, charge,etc...basically every light except your headlight high beam light will come on in the event of an alt failure.
Go to the diagnostic box and run jumper from pin F/P to GND and open the gas cap and put your ear down to the filler. Switch the car to "ON", if the pump is working, you'll hear a light hum from it.
After that...check for Spark...

but the relays might be working but the fuel pump isn't . This way would give him a few seconds to hear it over the fact that his teeth are chattering from the NJ blizzard he is enduring.
