[quote name='Scrub' date='May 8 2005, 06:33 PM']hey dave shoot me a PM when you finish up...I'm gonna make a template out of galvanized steel, maybe you can make something for me with the template? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Yea you could either make an original from it or just coat it with something more attractive like Carbon Kevlar or whatever. You could cut the template from 1/8" ply also. That would be alot easier.

I pulled the mold off the plug I made this morning. I have some more finish work with it but I think it will do the trick. I am not real happy with the resin I was using though. I tried to save cash by not buying the West system resin. The stuff I have been using takes forever to cure. Hey Rob I was thinking that I might get a nice copy if I tried out polyester resin with a gelcoat as opposed to the epoxy with pigment. What do you think?

i've started making the plug for my brake duct inlets... gonna be interesting when i get to the rear half of it, i think i may be better off doing aluminum tubes in the back instead of FG though.

FD3boost, be expecting a PM from me asking about some details on this though.

The west sytem will take even longer to dry, you dont want a fast cure when making molds, especially using epoxy for molds, its really a waste of money using epoxy for molds, plus they generate ALOT of heat, to the point where they will smoke, distort, and bubble, and possible ignite surrounding materials.

There might be something wrong with your mixing ratio of the polyester was taking along time to dry, but regardless- use gel coat and polyester for the molds, then use epoxies for the parts if you want. You want to do it in stages, wax the part a few times with mold release wax, apply good tooling gel to the part, let that cure, apply one layer of 3/4oz FG mat, let that cure, then add more 1.5oz mat on to that, make sure you use laminating resin with no wax and MEKP >45% at a ratio of 2%.
