I have not shared any of my projects lately.
Anyway here are some ducts I am making this week for Peter Hahns Crooked willow oil cooler kit with the Rotary Extreme 99 front. I had to carve the plugs and havve both sides in resin now. I am going to go ahead and glass them up tomorrow. I think the plan is to get these to Peter for his trip to VIR. Then once he can get the car over here I will go ahead and test fit and correct the plug where needed. I made my plug off a set of the original CRW ducts that were hacked up by a body shop as you can see in the picture. Pics. |
Another one that I have chipping away at is AC panel blanks. I have been working on the plug and mold for this for a while now. I have tried a few different aproaches with this. I am about to try another run this weekend. Here is a picture of the plug as of now.

sweet.... what did you make the plug out of? I need to make a few odds and ends like this also.
|
Woweeee! Good **** Dave! One of the things I've always, always wanted to learn is mold making and composite layup, but I alwyas seem to have better/more alcoholic things to spend that extra cash on.
|
Another one that I wanted to do make isa carbon fiber UIM cover. I know this is not orginal. But it seems easyt enough and I was going to give it a go. I have started to mock up a manifold and throttle body so I could start working on a mold. I have not really gotten to far with this yet because all the other stuff i got going on. I hope to get this one turned out in a couple of weeks.
I ended up using dry foam that is used in floral arrangements. It's cheap and is super easy to carve and shape. It makes a huge mess though. So all you do is carve the shape coat it in resin, fix any imperfections with glazing putty then give it a few coats with a release wax. Then it's ready for glass |
dave if you can get these made, count me in for one. If its a serious project ill paypal you a deposit on it. opps- will they fit a stock UIM ? I looked again and noticed that it's a differnet manifold. sorry |

I looked again and noticed that it's a differnet manifold. sorry
It's only looks different because i molded in the center void on a stock manifold. I change the shape only to clear the center stud. It is desgined for a stock uim. It will mount off the two top studs on the throttle body and the one mounting tab on the rear of the manifold. No need for a deposit. I will let you know when I get some done. |

These are the things I want to learn to do this winter, im very interested in learning to do fiberglass etc.
Dave that pic of the UIM, that is an actual UIM just covered in something right? Whats it covered in? newb alert, yes. kevin. |
Yea, its just a manifold and throttle body. I filled in the space with epoxy putty and layed some primer over it. It's coated with resin now. |

kevin.
I'm always learning as I go. I have been using fiberglass for a few years but I have only recently been using it on a daily basis. I've been curing under vacuum which gives pretty awesome results. |
Man those look badass. Which I had some skills like that. I'd give it a go if I had a garage.

hey dave shoot me a PM when you finish up...I'm gonna make a template out of galvanized steel, maybe you can make something for me with the template? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png
Yea you could either make an original from it or just coat it with something more attractive like Carbon Kevlar or whatever. You could cut the template from 1/8" ply also. That would be alot easier. |
I pulled the mold off the plug I made this morning. I have some more finish work with it but I think it will do the trick. I am not real happy with the resin I was using though. I tried to save cash by not buying the West system resin. The stuff I have been using takes forever to cure. Hey Rob I was thinking that I might get a nice copy if I tried out polyester resin with a gelcoat as opposed to the epoxy with pigment. What do you think?

i've started making the plug for my brake duct inlets... gonna be interesting when i get to the rear half of it, i think i may be better off doing aluminum tubes in the back instead of FG though.
FD3boost, be expecting a PM from me asking about some details on this though. |
Catch me on AIM if you like. IOJINXOI
The west sytem will take even longer to dry, you dont want a fast cure when making molds, especially using epoxy for molds, its really a waste of money using epoxy for molds, plus they generate ALOT of heat, to the point where they will smoke, distort, and bubble, and possible ignite surrounding materials. There might be something wrong with your mixing ratio of the polyester was taking along time to dry, but regardless- use gel coat and polyester for the molds, then use epoxies for the parts if you want. You want to do it in stages, wax the part a few times with mold release wax, apply good tooling gel to the part, let that cure, apply one layer of 3/4oz FG mat, let that cure, then add more 1.5oz mat on to that, make sure you use laminating resin with no wax and MEKP >45% at a ratio of 2%. |
