Well, I was able to pick up a used set of twin turbos for the car. They should be here in a day or 2. Looks like a new replacement set is over 2 Gs which is a little out of my reach at this time. The set I bought have around 10K miles on them. I noticed a couple of cracks in the turbo manifold but they don`t appear to be too large. What I am wondering is, how big of a crack is too much? From what I can gather, it is a gray area but the biggest hangup is cracks around the wastegate opening.



Anyone have any experience in this area?

 

Cracks are inevitable in the design of the FD manifold. My understanding is that you don't want them to extend beyond the gasket "line". That said, I know of a couple of owner's whose cracks were pretty bad but they had no issues. In one instance the wall of the manifold was also erroded badly, but the turbos still made boost normally.

That's sort of the good news Nat. In all honesty, buying a set of used twins is a crap-shoot IMO. And few seem to be able to rebuild them with any success either. Hopefully you got a decent set that won't smoke.

 

Crap shoot is right. I too, am hoping that on close examination of the twins, that they are usable & won`t give me any headaches for quite awhile. We will see. I know one thing is for sure, I have a great deal of work ahead of me. I hope it all goes well. Really looking forward to having the car back on the road this summer. I doubt that I have put 1000 miles on the car since I bought new Z rated tires for it, maybe 2 years ago now.
