From what I've heard, you only get bad mileage because of the whole flex-fuel thing. Because of the high octane thing, ethanol runs best at something like 1:15 compression - but you can't have that with flex-fuel engines because of the petrol aspect. Apparently at the high compression, you'd at least get the same effiency as we're getting with petrol now - I don't understand that though because there's 2/3 the energy in a gallon of ethanol that there is in a gallon of petrol.

I understand that I need to tune my power fc for it. I know that it has a higher octane which means it has a longer burn rate so I can advance the timing and up the boost and I also realize that it doesn't have as many btu's as gasoline so I need to burn a lot more of it to achiece any more power. my reasoning basically comes out to= higher octane means more protection form detonation so stress factors can be increased ( boost, advanced timing ) and more hp can be gained from those without damaging the motor because of the higher octane. do you agree?

if i were to use it, it gas milage wouldnt mean anything, what attracts me to ethenol is that i can get e85 for 1.70 a gallon and its big drop in combustion temperature

ever see an alcohol dragster with frost on the top of the supercharger?

i want to run it in a seperate fuel cell, for drag purpose only... pretty much enough only enough to do a burnout and race and come back, switch back to gas and repeat.

btw for tuning, MEGASQUIRT

yea im a cheap skate

but 200$ for ems + datalogger

=

worth the extra work

Octane has nothing to do with the power output of fuel. Its a common misconception.

Nor will it octane compensate a/f ratios. Your gonna be starvinly lean running e85 on a gasoline tunned car.

And if you didnt have a catastrophic failure already, you certainly will when raising the boost.

A fuel system needs to be beefed up to run e-85 to sustain power levels had with fuel. You simply need more 85 than gasoline..

Correct.

The best we can hope for is a variety of percentages (E-45, E-55, E-65) to give more mileage per tank. And still have some benefits of ethanol.

I'm aware that the tune has to be changed for e85 just as it would if you were attempting to run any other fuel (lower octane or race gas etc). I care nothing about the gas mileage. I have no intention of ever daily driving my ported motor with its t78. daily driving is what my honda is for. as far as beefing up the fuel system it is no where near stock. at its current state the only stock peices are the fuel (hard) lines and the tank itself. as far as what you said about higher octane having no ability to protect the motor against detonation then why do we notrun our cars on reguelar unleaded 87 and why does race gas (V.P C16) have an octane rating of 116?

Can you show me where I wrote that?

Let me say this in a different way. Octane is a petroleum based fuel, like propane. Octane rating is NOT a measure of a fuels power. It is a comparative measure (In %) to octanes ability to resist spontaneous ignition under compression and heat. That in itself should explain why "Race Gas" has high octane, and why your not gonna run 87 on your turbo rotary.

Refer to posts # 30 and # 32 from Dec 22 in this thread.

I misread your post

what I meant was that you can make more hp with a race gas setup since the fuel burns slower than a lower octane fuel. and I know that using higher octane does not mena you will not make more power what I

meant was that you protect it better with a slower burning fuel (i.e race gas )

as far as E-85 goes do you think that I could tune for more power than with 93 octane? that in a nut shell is really what I care about.

Manufacturers are saying 5% increase in power.

actually in consumer reports they did a test of e85 vs gasoline and the e85 although crappy gas milage, it did go the 1/4 mile .1 second faster

herblenny 01-03-2007 09:13 AM

5% increase in power is quite a bit.. if you take 400RWHP car... lol!

black93fd, I say go ahead and do the conversion.. Get bigger lines, pumps, injectors, et etc.. and see what you can do. Who knows, after you make 400-500 reliable HP, others might convert to E85.. Like I said earlier, If I had available pumps around, I wouldn't mind giving it a shot!

bheiman 01-03-2007 04:02 PM

there was a guy on rx7 club that was running 30% e85 and 70% premium and he gained 50hp, plus lower emmissions

the guy that is using it
