at idle im getting about 70 psi and about 85 under load up to about 3500 or so when it starts droping off. it drops off more under load than it does at higher rpms when its not under load.

ive got good oil level, so i dont know what the deal could be other than my sensor flaking out on me or something. i really dont want to have to yank anything out for this. the oil smells very much like gasoline

oh, when i say pressure is dropping off its coming down to nearly zero. i think if this were actually the case something would have broken by now

Probably the sensor.

Otherwise I'd say bearings or Eshaft plug thingy (that's a tech term.)

Is it a S4 or S5? I believe on the S4 when the oil control o-ring on the front cover goes bad you will get a drop in pressure at higher rpms. Mazdatrix has a FAQ on their website somewhere. My guage still acts funny sometimes. About 90% of the time its fine but sometimes it will drop down to nothing then go back up.

its an s5, but seriously the oil pressure couldnt be as low as its sometimes reading or the whole thing would have locked up by now.

so i suppose its time to replace the sensor. good excuse to get a mechanical one anyway

I thought my gauge had stopped working when I noticed low oil pressure and drove from IL to MI and back that way, then tore my motor down for a long over-due rebuild. I found the O ring on the front cover hanging out with a tear in it, I really did have low oil pressure But this was an S4 motor, car still ran fine and would go like hell up to 130s even in this condition... pretty surprising. I think my gauge is still kindof funky though, I think the point is.. if you suspect anything at all with your oil pressure. Make sure its not really low! get a seperate oil pressure gauge and put it on the motor where the oil pressure sending unit goes and compare the results with your gauge in the car. If it really is low stop driving and fix it. If not, fix the sending unit and/or gauge. My engine already needed a rebuild so I didnt really care when my gauge malfunctioned, if it were a good motor though I would have parked it til it was all straightened out.
