Just in the process of putting engine back together, and have a choice of six turbos (one of the joys of having a garage full of junk, ooops I mean old parts) We've cut two out because an apex seal went through them, but can anyone shed some light on what to look for to find the best one?

Make sure that it spins freely and there's minimal side to side movement of the shaft.

What's the definition of minimal? The one we think is best (which was purchased last year reconditioned) has a tiny bit of sideways movement.
