Timing chain

I was just wondering what would be called a timing chain on an rx-7 since it has no valves or cams? According to the previous owner it is broken and autozone sells a timgin chain for it?

There's nothing like that at all. The only chain in the motor is for the oil pump.

Sounds like you're being hosed man. The only thing "timing" wise a rotary has is the crank angle sensor and thats more like a distributor than a timing chain. Other than that the rotor runs on an eccentric shaft which can almost be equated to a crankshaft on a piston motor. The rotor takes care of all intake and exhaust exchanges as it rotates within the housing and passes the ports. (rotaries are so weird...

not really weird. I was into Dirtbike racing when i was a little jit (started when i was 11)...When i started getting into rotaries the easiest way i helped my self understand it better was by resembling them to 2stroke engines...Combustion sequence similar, cept u dont have the reed valves blocking the ports and ****...
