Hi all,

I'm disassembling my S4 13B for a rebuild. The oil pump chain seems pretty slack - I can measure 14mm of 'to & fro' at the mid-point. As I've never seen a new one, and there's no mention of an allowance in the FSM, how much is acceptable before it should be replaced?

Thanks in advance,

Curtis

14mm sounds like too much. Mine had about one link width of slack when I reinstalled it during a recent rebuild. This was on an S4 13B NA block.

Replace it if it's got a gazillion miles on it. They're only about $25 from Atkins Rotary, etc.

I checked mine on my FD and it had about 1-4" of slack. I dont know what is the limit but will just replace because motor has about 100k miles on it.

Right on. I think 3/8" was the limit. It should be in the FSM.

'To and Fro' is the incorrect way to measure. You should be measuring the deflection.

There was an allowance noted in my Hayne manual (which I don't have handy or else I would post).

12.5 mm (about 1/2 inch) (deflection + extension) is spec.

if ur doing a rebuild, it's almost always worth it to go for a new oil chain. its not that expensive.
