I usually tie the prop shaft to the trans through the U joint and around the shifter housing so it can't slide out of the engine, then I unbolt the flange on the differential side and bring the prop shaft out with the trans, no oily mess under the car.

I hope that you are useing a tranny jack. It makes the job 1000 times easier. I have done it doth ways.

I have a tranny jack and I don't really use it. I just lay with the tranny on my chest, slap it into place.
