My friend bought an 88 SE decent shape and motor runs fine fires right up but when you get on the gas right around 3500 RPM the car starts to surge. In my car you feel the powerband pulling but on his it pulls but surges at the same time. What could that be BTW car is dead stock Minus Air pump belt which has been off for a while!

um if its stock with the cats and the air pump isnt working the cats are clogged and are more than likely your problem.

yea cats are the enemy. possibly something with secondaries if the cats are fine.

quick check, is there a sulfur or rotten egg smell after continual driving?

my car has the exact same thing. someone (el) cut the airpump belt and then after that my exhaust started stinking and it started surging a little bit. so yes the cats are clogged.

It could also be the engine grounds. Clean off all grounding point, and see if that makes any difference. And if it dont well then atleast you know all your grounding points are clean.

good luck
