well the smoke can be a bad sign, but it depends on when and the color... if it's oil smoke (blueish) can be nothing or can be quite bad... white/sweet smelling coolant smoke, very bad. If it's black/brown you're just running rich and need some tuning. Since you mention it happeneing when it's cold... it could be just the ecu overcorrecting for the low temps and running too rich, if it's black/brown smoke.
yeah its hard to dial in the ecu correction map, cause you dont really have controlled conditions
