Hey guys,

My name is Struis (a boring nickname brought on to me by friends ). I come from the Netherlands, yeah that really flat country in Europe with no curby roads to take an Rx-7 out for a good spin haha

I drive a RX-7 Fb with a near but stock 12a in it. Some mods include a open exhaust system, electric cooling fan and a K&N air filter and some nice 17'' Akuza . I saw this forum and decided to register.

Well my first off question, when I've warmed up the engine (say like 10 km) and i push it towards high RPM's (you know the oh sh*t you need to shift beep) for a couple of times. She runs just fine with no exceptions to it all. After a while, while taking her to the red line, letting the throttle go near the redline a cloud of smoke appears through the exhaust. Is this normal? Or should i replace something?

Anyway pics say more then a 1000 words so here are some pics of my RX 7 FB

Greetings from Holland!

Struis

Welcome to nopistons, the car looks great!

I'll move this to the 1st gen section, you should get more answers there. Though, if it's anything like the FC, that could be a sign of your oil seals wearing out. When you rev up, the oil pressure builds high, then when you let off the oil gets into the combustion chamber.

I will have to agree with Baldy on the oil control seals. How many km are on the motor? You may want to think about a rebiuld before more stuff wears out. If you do a rebiuld now it's more likely you will be able to reuse most of the engine parts. (side plates, rotor housings, and rotors)

Thanks for the welcome guys!

Well, theres about 180.000 k on the motor. Dont know if she has been rebuild since then. What i do know is that shes always been in the Rx7 Club of Holland. So i think she has been cared for.

A rebuild..damn that was the last thing i wanted to hear

First off im gonna replace the oil filter and change my oil. Then see if it could go away. A friend of mine told me that might help....

Yeah I call me rx7 a she because she costs alot of money, drinks some oil, and has all the curbes in all the right places. And if you dont treat her right...shell cut your head clean off :P

And another question...I want to throw in some Bride, Recaro or Sparco seats in the rx. Does anyone know if you could get the ''rails'' pre assembled?

I would agree with the other guys about the oil seals, but I would ckeck a couple other things before you dive into a rbuild. Can you smell it (fuel or oil?)? Are you runing the stock carb?... how much oil are you burning? And does it only puff smoke after a high rev dump?

oh yeah, keep adding oil!

Beautiful car! I love to two tone paint!

Tnx for the compliments.

Yeah its a stock carb, running a bit high on the idle when the engine has been warmed up like 1200 to 1500 revs. Need to adjust the carburator on that one..

Id say i smell more fuel then oil when shes running. And the smoke only appears when started cold(which is normal isnt it?) or occasionally in the high rpm zone. She doesnt always puff smoke in the high rpm just occasionally in 2nd or 3rd gear. About how much oil shes burning. Im adding 0.5 liter for every 500-600 kilometers.

Help Anyone got any ideas?

if it is the oil rings, to fix it u would need a rebuild... ive had rx-7s that smoke like you are explaining and they keep running fine, and dont smoke any worse for years and years.

so its only a problem requiring a rebuild when you deside its too much smoke for you to bear, failed oil rings dont really cuase any damage, just alot of smoke!

I second that , drive it until it bothers you (just don't run out of oil). If it smells like gas, you might want to look at the carb first (much cheeper and easier), it could be dumping too much gas or the mixture is off.
