I was just kind of curious, what would be the max rpm's i could take my car to safely. I have Haltech so i can easily change it. i also have a bunch of other stuff done to the engine. its a series 4 japanese 13B turbo, street ported. just kind of curious.

Also my dad keeps telling me that my engine is going to go any day now. he says he can tell by the way it smells. Are there any signs that would let you know if your engine is going to die on you in the near future?

the safe limit is largely dependant on the internal modifications.



normally 8500rpm is around where it starts getting interesting.

kind of hard to explain smell, its only after heavy throttle, i think its just the smell of the 2 stroke oil i put in with the gas.

it would smell a bit like a chainsaw or weed wacker, depending on how much premix.



if your dad isnt knowledgable in rotary engines don't worry about it, unless you suspect something is wrong also.

he is very knowledgeable in piston engines. I told him that i think rotaries are very different, and i run extremely rich and oil in the gas, thats why it smells funny. its still pulls really good.

Being very good with pistons engines means nothing when you get a Rotary engine in front of you.



They are completly different Animal. Your father could be a race-car driver. driving a V8 Twinturbo for 5 years. but if he doesnt know the smell, sound, looks, feel, and architecture of a rotary engine he doesnt know it. Like i said. they are completly different animals. Are you running Open exhaust? Or even slightly modded exhaust? ( no cats/cat back) if so, that's a normal engine smell. If it's smoking than it's a diff story. BUt rotary's do have their own smell to them. IN a way.





And like Pengaru said. after about 8500 the internals cant handle it. you will start to get Eccentric Shaft flex. and than it is very possible to strip one of your rotary gears.



Get some hardend gears and a hardend E-shaft. Port that sucker and your talking 10...11000 RPMS



I've seen it. BUt not on stock internals. also having lighter rotors helps for revving high.. Just my 7 cents

if you spin it over 9000 you may want to think about the clutch exploding

I agree with you, i kept telling him that rotaries are totally different. It does smoke, but only if its colder. or if i'm getting on it hard, especially going over a bridge or something. as far as the high reving, its already street ported. but 10k sounds too high for a turbo. my redline is set at 7200 right now, that sounds like a good area for me, at least for now. it pulls pretty good all the way there too.

well the smoke can be a bad sign, but it depends on when and the color... if it's oil smoke (blueish) can be nothing or can be quite bad... white/sweet smelling coolant smoke, very bad. If it's black/brown you're just running rich and need some tuning. Since you mention it happeneing when it's cold... it could be just the ecu overcorrecting for the low temps and running too rich, if it's black/brown smoke.
