Mine is manual so there are two nipples on the thermowax ...the one closest to the firewall is plugged ...does that mean the thermowax is ineffective? ...because I have been having cold idle problems and wondered if I need to route that back to some place to fix the problem

Yes.

There should be a coolant circuit flowing throught it.

From the top of the rear iron (under the UIM) to the TB to the BAC to the water pump housing.
