Did you use a Mazda thermostat? Is your water pump working? Any leaks anywhere?

do what I would do- just change everything if you dont know the last time it was changed.

car is old- im sure it could use it, drain the coolant out, change everything- fresh coolant in and im sure its fixed.

If your whole cooling system is intact, then you could potentially have a problem with a blown coolant seal in the motor located at either the compression side or exhaust side of the block.

Exhaust side leak would give you black deposits in the coolant, and bubble up your system.

Compression side would give you mainly air bubbles (pressurizing your system too soon for you, and bubbling over more than you'd see on an exhaust side leak, based on that there is no place for pressure to go other than a blown seal area, as where the exhaust has a gigantic port for the gas to escape), and you might see some evidence of fuel in the coolant.

Otherwise, listen to everyone. Replace the thermostat, flush your system. Assuming your rad and heater core are good. If you've done this, and you're not losing or leaking coolant anywhere except the overflow, suspect the motor.
