No hot start and smoke?
Thanks for the initial feedback.
I did have it out and the following happened:
1. after engine was hot, it stalled (my fault w/clutch) but wouldn't start up again. Acted like it was flooded. THis is a fuel injected 13b. After waiting 15 minutes, finally started...but not too willingly.
Once running, maintains a solid idle around 500rpm.
The car has been sitting for several months and only driven for a couple of short stents.
2. After getting back and parking (ran without a problem on the way back) tried starting it again...same result. Acted like it was flooded. Did NOT touch gas pedal.
3. After getting back, noticed 'smoke' wafting up through some of the conole vents AND up through the shifter boot. Smelled like oil. There's no sign of oil leak under car where it was parked and only a couple smll wet spots around the oil pan.
Any thoughts on any of the above would be GREATLY appreciated!!!
Thanks!
Nick

The car doesn't sound too different from mine. I think the starting problem is probably leaky injectors, likely coupled with some other issues if your idle is as low as 500. Check the TPS adjustment.
I know my car had been sitting for maybe 2 years when I first cranked it up. I figured it was toast. It would smoke pretty bad once everything started to heat up. Turned out it was just some nut shells left by squirrels and some brake fluid burning off the exhaust where it dripped out of the leaky ABS pump.
How much have you driven the car?
I've stalled mine and not been able to start it without pulling the EGI fuses and turning the engine over for 10 seconds or so with the throttle wide open. Then put the fuses back and try again. I don't stall it out much anymore.

The smoke seems to be coming up through the shifter boot and vents when vents are open, so I'm thinking maybe a seal has dried out?
It's been sitting for about 6 months with only an occasional start.
By the way, what is the best way to cure a leaky injector? This is the first injected engine I've ever had. Alot of this is new to me.
I'm in Richmond, VA, and there's only a couple of places I've found that have a reasonable stock of RX-7 parts. I've been to CAP salvage yard for parts for the first gen.
Thanks!

Not sure about your smoke.
Only way I know to fix a leaky injector is to replace it, or maybe send it off to have it cleaned and blueprinted.
I think Mazdatrix sells a pressure bleed that will relieve the fuel pressure by sending it back to the return line through a small orifice and keep it from leaking into the motor when its not running. Kind of a cheap temporary fix.
