Stripped alternator fan belt... engine got hot hot hot!
#1
Hey guys.... im new here so bare with me... but today i was driving my 88 10 AE TII s5 swapped.
I realized my temp was getting hot very quick... it got to the point where it was VERY close to the "H" on the gauge.... I found out my alternator/ fan belt had been stripped to pieces..
now from what i have read.... the S5 temp gauge is a POS and by the time it shows it really hot... its hotter that what it tells you...it wasnt smoking or anything by the time i cut the ignition though..
SO now.. i am very paranoid of what the condition of my engine would be after i get the belt fixed...
its sitting outside a shop right now but they havent gotten it to it yet.
would I most likey need a rebuild?
I really hope not!!

Oh yes sorry for not clearifying that.
S5 is a series 5 engine, the engine used from 89+ for the second generation. I think there is that 25 HP difference if I can remember right.
I really hope you are right rotarychainsaw.
Fingers crossed.

Okay.... I think I read your question wrong rotarychainsaw lol. sorry...
The S5 swap is the whole engine and the turbo. Thats how I got it, it was my friends and now i have it. Im guessing its the sensor from an S5....which means BAD...

From what I read, the sensors are the same for s4 and s5, and it's the gauge that decides whether it works or just stays in the middle. AQlso I had an '86 not 85, so it was an FC and I got the gauge up to the H once
*edit - but as mike said, it doesn't really matter. Just slap a belt on and hope for the best.

It's the gauge. Never trust the stock FC gauges IMHO.
As far as your motor goes. It's going to depend on the condition the motor was in before it overheated. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. When my belt went, I lost, lol.
If it isn't smoking when you get it fixed, you should be ok, but don't expect it to take to much abuse like that...

Im planning to get a fluidyne rad.... get my whole cooling system going good.. but thats only if i havent fried my seals from this over heat...
The motor is from japan, and its only got like 60k on it after the swap... **** if its gone bad im gonna shoot myself in the foot.
Thanks for the input guys.

Well got the belt replace along with an oil change cause it need one.
Seems fine, havent drove it hard though.... no smoke, the temp level is stable at around a quarter up the meter. Temp stable at idle but idleing is a little bit high, fluxuates. Sometimes it even goes up to 1500... but other than that i think i won this battle. Fluidyne here I come!
