I have been trying to fix my son's 90 rx7. it runs okay up until about 3000 rpm but bogs down after that. Installed a new intake manifold gasket, fuel filter, replaced all vacuum lines. No trouble codes set. It will go about 30 mph all day long but no faster. Anyone have any tips for me?

Turbo or non-turbo. By bogs down do you mean it falls flat on it's face and won't go above 3,000 or does it stumble at 3,000 then go past it to say 4500 no probs?

Any mods, fuel controller, over sized injectors, etc, etc...?

no mod's, non turbo, rebuilt by atkins 9000 miles ago. It falls flat on it's face. At about 3000 it just really loses power, sounds like it is starved for fuel. I checked the fuel pump and regulator yesterday, it is fine. The problem is worse when you try to drive the car.

I found the problem with my son's rx7, 1 big bang and a cloud of yellow dust and black smoke out of the tailpipes later.... it runs fine.

obviously a preconvert or converter plugged up.

Yes, it was a bad cat. I had broken the exhaust apart at the main convertor and that did not help, so I assume it was a plugged preconvertor. I is running great now, I gave the car back to my son and told him to take it to a muffler shop and have them cut out the bad component and install new. I wonder if you even need the preconvertor?

Does the car have all the emissions stuff on it, or has it been removed? The cats will clog quickly if the air pump isn't working.

Most of the Mazda exhaust is about attenuating noise and passing emissions. If you are not worried about either, then fewer components = betterer.

Running 87 with precats gone (straight pipe to the main and replaced it with after market) car runs fine and stock tune with no problems.

Might as well replace Main Cat too as your paying for work and I am sure it's not much better. The car is 19 years old replace it before it fails also.
