A lot of gunk can accumulate in that area; gas, oil, coolant all pass through that area. The best thing is to do what you have planned, pull the UIM and clean it up, fix anything that needs fixing (fuel lines, PD, coolant line, oil metering lines, vacuum lines).
Also, not sure if you know, the shifter hole fluid does not connect/run to the rest of the tranny fluid. You have to drain/fill the tranny fluid from under the car (there's a bolt plug on the side of the tranny, and on the bottom, do a search, there are several methods for filling it). To get the nasty fluid out of the shifter hole, use a turkey baster (or something similar).

yeah its the 91, i gotta lot of **** to do to it for it to start running right, but it has held up for the last 2 days of driving it to work and back. sounds like an sti still, but its straitining out. i think is probly from carbon build up from it sitting for 2 long, so i threw in a little less then a 1/2 quart or premix to half a tank to prevent blowing it up, if the smoke from uim is for an omp line and hopefully it will also help loosen up all the carbon in the engine. and what an ******* who uses silicon for intake gaskets?
