Thumbs down

Im new to the RX7 world and Im having a problem with my 87NA. Whenever I put any kind of load on the motor in second gear at low to mid RPMs I hear this metal clancking noise for a couple seconds and the car hesitates. I put 87 gas in it like the manual says but someone told me it still might be detonation. Please Help!!

PS- my idol is also kinda high, I dont know if that would have anything to do with it.

When I would advance the timing too far on my old RX-2, the sound was kinda like a marbles in a tin can sound. If you're hearing a hard mettalic clunking, it's probably something else, like the exhaust hittting the underbody.

By all means, check the timing to make sure it's on spec, or have someone who knows rotaries check it for you. And try running a tankful of premium gas to see if that makes any difference.

There's a single pin green connector near the battery. Bridge it to ground. This is the "initial set connector". It locks the timing. After doing use a timing light to align the yellow mark on the e-shaft pulley with the timing indicator. There are two marks on the pulley about 3/8" apart. If the color has owrn off you're looking for the mark to the right when both are at the top of the pulley and you are facing the engine from the front of the car. Loosen the lock screw on the CAS and rotate it until the marks align.

When you're done remove the wire from the set connector.
