I'll see what we can see later on tonight. I have the synthetic gear oil, plugs, engine oil, filter, coolant, anti-rust additive for coolant, and I'll have the bearing and hose tonight, so we should be able to get quite a bit done.

How do I go about checking clutch hydraulics? I should change the fluid in the clutch system anyway...it's pretty dirty.

Back to the T/O bearing...I'll give the symptoms again to see what else could be the problem. On other rare occasions, the car jumps forward a little while in gear with the clutch in. What else should I check to make sure I don't have to pull the tranny again?

The rattling sounds like the T/O bearing, but if it looks good who knows. Is the transmission front cover ok? You should change both the pilot bearing and seal if you can get them out. Otherwise just give them some grease.[/quote]

When you spin the bearing fast enough you can feel the bearings rubbing so it's not in the greatest shape that's for sure.

Dunno if you want to save the cash for a clutch or not, be nice to do it while its out . . . not that I mind pulling it again!

What should we look for on the cover? I've not been out to examine it since we pulled it all. Don't have the puller for the pilot bearing :(

This is what Mazdatrix says about the front cover:

Transmission Front Cover with Seal

It is always a good idea to replace the front seal on the transmission when replacing a clutch. What we are finding is considerable wear on the transmission front cover from the continual release bearing movement. If worn too much, the pressure plate will fail prematurely from release bearing side movement and misalignment.

Very dirty fluid could be a sign of a leak. Just look for leaks at the hose, slave, and master cylinders. The slave cylinder may be leaking inside of the car.

Yes, that's for bleeding the clutch. A long 8 mm socket works well.
