I put a thermostat in and got the fan shroud back on filled it with coolant and went to start it up. I cranked it for a little while and it wouldnt turn over and then i heard a pop, at first i thought it was just flooding up but then realized it was the engine bay. I turned the ignition off as fast as i could and then smoke started coming out. I got out as quick as i could and tryed to see what was going on but didnt make it. All i know is everything still works on the car and i can start the motor but it will run at 300 rmps and then die about 5 seconds later. I couldnt find any burnt wires or anything and from what i saw the smoke was from the drivers side strut tower area.

I've been out in the rain for 20 minutes trying to find any burnt wires or anything and i've had no luck yet. I tryed starting it again and theres no luck, but i did notice the air/fuel gauge is stoich so im getting fuel atleast. Is it possable a coil could have blown? How would i check that. If it would stop raining it would make this alot easier on me.

ok first your a/f gauge is gong to be completely useless in this situation with the engine not even running.

chekc your afm, particularly the connector on it.

and the usual things, check for spark, fuel pump running etc.

300rpm sounds fast too, 300rpm is what mine will crank when it's flooded.

I got it to run once but not well, its really rough and i had to hold it at about half throttle. As soon as i let off the rpms went straight to 300 and it died again. It was at 2k when i let off. Its running like its not getting good spark. Im still not exactly sure what the problem exactly is though im just gonna give up til morning. Hopefuly when im not as tired and theres more light ill be able to find the problem.

Out of curiosity i pulled the fuel return line off and tryed to start the car. Sockingly it decided to start and run perfect until i turned it off. I put the line back on and tryed starting the car it, it started but missed bad and then died and went back to the cranking but not turning over. What the hell is going on here?

the return line thing was nothing i checked it all out and its fine. Tryed the same thing again and it wouldnt start. I got the motor to turn over again though and pushed it to stay alive. Im deffintly not getting good spark. The reason why im not sure. So how do i check the coils and make sure theyre working right?
