im still at working trying to figure out whats wrong with my 7. i found a poor mans compression test at another 7 site that told of a way to use a standard compression guage to test for 3 even "bumps" of at least 85psi.

of course i know that the mazda unit is the one to use for best results but i cant bring myself to pay $1600 for a tool that i might just use once. my engine ranged between 89 and 91 psi using this method. does anyone know if this way actually works and if not is there another way of testing for good compression?

that way works fine. anything over about 75psi is "good"

100psi is about the norm for an old engine...
