Do you still have the air pump on there?

adjusted incorrectly.. a double pulley will not fix the shredding of belts but if u have no AP u should have one anyways

I had the same problem wit a protege I owned. The damn thing would destroy an Autozone belt in a week put a mazda belt on it no problem!

I know it's a late post but my '89 FC burned off 2 belts with 3 weeks this past winter. Make sure you do NOT over tighten the belt. If you do it will rip it to shreds in a matter of a couple of weeks. Make sure there is some slack but not enough where it will slip and fall off. Personally it doesn't sound like to need the double pulley to me.
